Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Anatomic Pathology Technologist in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory department. Here, you will perform accessioning, grossing tissue biopsies, and assisting with autopsies for the hospital, outpatient clinics, and outside clients. The Anatomic Pathology lab is known for its internationally recognized pathology faculty at the University of Chicago. They provide world-class consultative services by delivering timely, precise, and insightful results in a collegial and supportive manner. Our faculty are experts in the study and diagnosis of disease. With a wide array of specialists, we lead the investigation, identification, and understanding of disease, providing physicians with critical information to treat and manage the patient's condition. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Eligible for a Sign On Bonus up to $1,500

In consultation with the Anatomical Pathology Supervisor and Manager, is responsible for activities supporting the receipt and preparation of surgical, cytology and autopsy specimens. Performs gross examination and dissection of biopsy specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures and in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements in order to provide results of the highest level of quality to physicians and their patients.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinate activities at the front desk; organize paperwork, answer phone calls, direct inquiries to appropriate staff, etc.
  • Ensure that specimens meet acceptance criteria for accessioning into the LIS (per policy) and reject as appropriate.
  • Accession specimens into LIS by sub-specialty and appropriately triage the specimen for gross examination based on priority (intraoperative consultations & lymphoma work-ups, tissue bank, “rush”, and routine processing).
  • Troubleshoot and document problem resolutions.
  • Gross biopsies and perform additional testing as necessary.
  • Cut and stain intraoperative consult frozen sections.
  • Prepare and process cytology specimens.
  • Participate in autopsy evisceration/duties as trained and assigned.
  • Provide patient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurate performance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic stages.
  • Answer inquiries regarding specimen handling, results, and other technical information.
  • Appropriately assist clinicians with requests and seek out resources necessary when information is not available to answer questions.
  • Daily maintenance of equipment in the gross room/cytology and autopsy suite.
  • Actively participate in troubleshooting and work to resolve issues.
  • Assist in training new employees, students, pathology residents, and others.
  • Assist in new testing, procedures, and equipment validation and implementation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in clinical laboratory science, life sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Must satisfy CLIA 88 personnel qualifications performing high complexity testing.
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and laboratory/hospital information systems.
  • Proven ability to use computers for data entry, retrieval, and statistical analysis.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work within narrow timeframes, outstanding organizational ability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maneuver/lift bulky containers.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.

  • Shift: Mid Shift - Days (12:00 am-8:30 pm), Monday - Friday with rotating Saturdays.
