Job summary

Advocate Health in Winston-Salem is hiring for a full-time Lab: Support Services position. The role supports referral lab testing, oversees complex orders, and acts as a liaison for customer concerns. The schedule is 7:00am–4:00pm with a 1-hour lunch, 40 hours per week, first shift.

You will collaborate with departments, maintain lab operations knowledge, handle inventory, and assist pathologists as needed while ensuring regulatory requirements and patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED/HSED required.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in customer service or a laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with referral lab testing inquiries and add-ons.
  • Oversee complex laboratory orders for the department.
  • Serve as liaison for customer concerns and resolve issues promptly.
  • Maintain knowledge of ACL, CoPath and Epic Beaker systems.
  • Manage shipping of materials per site and regulatory requirements.
  • Support billing staff with technical guidance; monitor inventory.
  • Participate in meetings and assist leadership with process improvements.
  • Review reports and assist pathologists as needed.
  • Ensure department resources and accreditation requirements are met.
  • Coordinate inbound lab calls and follow through on inquiries.

Position Highlights

Education/Experience/Certifications To Qualify
  • High School Graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in customer service, or laboratory environment.
How You’ll Impact Patient Care
  • Partner with other departments and team members to resolve problems and respond to inquiries pertaining to referral lab testing, add-ons, consults and additional requests.
  • Provide oversite of complex laboratory orders for the department.
  • Acts as a liaison for customer concerns. Resolves customer service issues appropriately and promptly. Works closely with support staff and care providers.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all laboratory operations and databases of ACL, including CoPath and Epic Beaker.
  • Package and ship material in accordance with site, local, State, and Federal requirements.
  • Acts as a resource for providing general direction and technical assistance to billing and other laboratory staff.
  • Monitor inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Participate in group meetings as needed for educational purposes and partners with leadership for process improvements.
  • Review reports and assist pathologists as needed.
  • Maintain department resources and completes all regulatory requirements for laboratory accreditation.
  • Coordinates and follows through on inbound telephone calls for the laboratory.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
  • Intermediate computer skills using word processing applications, mail, fax, and email.
  • Must be able to multi-task many projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include alternate site assignment.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team while performing at a high level of productivity.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality in and out of the workplace.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with various physicians, co-workers, leadership, and other health care providers.
  • Ability to handle and help resolve all escalated issues and effectively deal with the difficult customers and challenging situations.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job including computers, printers, faxes, and telephones.
  • Must be able to sit 95% of the workday.
  • Must be willing to handle potentially hazardous and/or infectious material.
  • Ability to use the telephone effectively with a clear speaking voice and a courteous manner.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Generally exposed to a normal office environment.
