Job summary

Advocate Health's Wisconsin Central Lab: Histology team seeks a full-time technician for the 2nd shift. You will receive and sort specimens, assist with handling, and ensure proper labeling and tracking for testing.

You will perform limited CLIA-guided testing, enter results in the LIS, notify providers of critical findings, and support QC, equipment maintenance, and training of new staff. Travel and physical demands may apply.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Typically requires 3 years of experience in related laboratory functions.
  • Knowledge of medical terms and basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

Pay Range $21.85 - $32.80

Major Responsibilities

  • Receives and sorts specimens and assists with detailed specimen handling; packages and tracks specimens for transport and performs specimen storage and retrieval. Ensures that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Resolves specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifies requests.
  • Performs limited testing under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) 1988 guidelines, according to established policies and procedures.
  • Performs laboratory result entry in the computer system. Enters and verifies test requests into the laboratories' computer system. Notifies providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results and exceptions as defined by policy and procedure.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and makes minor repairs when needed. Runs quality control checks. Reviews logs and documentation to ensure compliance needs are met.
  • Reviews new lot/new shipment on testing in areas of oversight to ensure QC performed as needed. Also includes lot to lot requirements.
  • Processes specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification.
  • Acts as a resource and trains new employees.
  • Assists Supervisor with workflow improvement, dept. projects and implementation of system initiatives, where appropriate.
  • Assist in a specialty area of the laboratory department, including but not limited to Microbiology, Genetics, Anatomic Pathology, Transfusion Services, etc.
  • Assists supervisor and technical specialist in inspection preparedness. Familiar with CAP checklist items that pertain to their duties in the areas of their oversight.

Minimum Education And Experience Required

  • License/Registration/Certification Required: None Required
  • Education Required: High School Graduate
  • Experience Required: Typically requires 3 years of experience in related laboratory functions.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience in laboratory functions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical terms.
  • Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.
  • Keyboarding and typing skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good listening skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk and bend the majority of the workday.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radioactive and/or infectious agents.
  • Will be exposed to human blood, tissue, and body fluids.
  • Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Position may require travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.
