VitaKey is an exciting start-up using proprietary technology for encapsulating macronutrients, micronutrients, probiotics, biologics, small molecules, etc. to improve the nutritional value of foods and beverages to improve human health. We are seeking innovative and motivated scientists and engineers to be part of the company's next-phase of growth at our Durham NC HQ. Learn more about our company on our website at www.VitaKey.com
Role Summary
Responsibilities will involve establishing quantitative bioanalytical approaches for nutraceuticals, vitamins, macronutrients, probiotic metabolites, polymers, food additives, and formulations for both raw materials, formulation platforms, and complex biological samples. Responsibilities will also include working in an analytical laboratory that performs physicochemical characterization (e.g., extractions, water activity, size analysis, microscopy, and long term stability) to guide formulations development. You will serve as an independent contributor on project teams. Projects will be highly interdisciplinary, at the intersection of engineering, biochemistry, materials science, food science and nutrition.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Use targeted and untargeted LC-UV, LC-MS/MS, to develop new quantitative and qualitative analytical methods for VitaKey payloads including small molecules, complex mixtures, macromolecules, hormones, raw materials, and formulations with minimal supervision.
- Use particle size analysis, microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, UV-VIS, and water activity to characterize VitaKey payloads and formulation platforms
- Establish documentation practices including sample submission systems, method validations, certificates of analysis, and method transfers
- Establish test methods and acceptance criteria to support certificates of analysis for VitaKey formulations and to verify raw materials
- Conduct routine analysis on raw payloads, formulated payloads, and complex biological samples
- Perform untargeted metabolomics experiments on complex nutrient mixtures, small and large molecule digestion products, secretions from cell models, and/or biological samples (e.g., plasma)
- Define and execute long term stability studies on raw payloads and formulated products, including within complex matrices
- Conduct analytical instrument calibration, maintenance, trouble shooting, and laboratory facility upkeep as well as technical development to update instrumentation as necessary
- Work with external partners for raw materials selection and characterization
- Develop purification approaches to isolate compounds of interest from raw materials
- Conduct analytical method transfer to CROs and CMOs
- Work with fellow scientists within the group and with external laboratories, and present ideas and results
- May mentor and direct other scientists
Required Qualifications/Experience
- PhD with an additional 2-5 years of experience in academia or industry in quantitative and qualitative bioanalysis from complex sample matrices.
- Direct experience performing untargeted metabolomics on biological and nutrient samples using LC-MS/MS is highly preferred
- Direct experience developing sample preparation/extraction and LC-MS/MS methods to quantify low abundance analytes in complex biological matrices is highly preferred
- Experience with sample preparation techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, pre- and post-column derivatization, etc.
- Experience independently developing novel LC-MS/MS quantitative assays for small molecule and large molecule analytes
- Exposure to AI or machine learning models and/or principles
- Experience working with professionals from formulation science, chemical engineering, bioengineering, pharmaceutical sciences, polymer chemistry, food science or allied disciplines
- Experience independently designing stability studies under ICH guidelines
- Experience working with proteins, carbohydrates, polymers, microparticles, bacteria, and/or lipids
- Experience generating and interpreting experimental data
- Entrepreneurial and self-motivated work style; comfort in ambiguity
- Excellent cross-disciplinary skills in communicating ideas to both scientists and non-scientists
- Startup experience is highly valued, but not required.
- Ability to adjust rapidly to changing scientific priorities and technologies
