Qualifications

• Broad knowledge of analytical, clinical, food, inorganic or radiochemistry principles
• Specialized knowledge in physics, statistics, biochemistry, toxicology
• Extensive knowledge of and ability to operate highly specialized laboratory equipment
• Practical knowledge of laboratory safety
• Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and policies related to the specialty
• Ability to evaluate procedures and compare methods critically
• Ability to appear in court as an expert witness
• Ability to record data and produce reports in a regulated setting
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Ability to stay current on field developments

Responsibilities

• Perform chemical and physical analyses to determine contaminants or toxins across clinical, food, water, environmental, or other samples
• Use manual or automated instrumentation meeting CLIA, EPA, FDA, and USDA regulations
• Adhere to Quality Assurance guidelines and pass proficiency testing
• Maintain and service laboratory instrumentation and perform preventive maintenance
• Complete paperwork, maintain logs, and update SOPs
• Maintain a safe, organized work area and train others on procedures
• Meet testing personnel responsibilities per applicable standards
• Initiate applied research in the specialty area
• Serve as technical expert on samples and analytic systems for agency staff
• Support or supervise others as needed depending on agency requirements
