Job Overview

Environmental San Diego, California. Salary: $60,000.00 – $85,000.00 annually.

GEI Consultants, Inc. seeks an entry to mid-level analytical chemist to work onsite at Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC) in San Diego, CA. The role supports bench‑level analytical chemistry needs and other related environmental programs.

Responsibilities
  • Bench‑level analytical chemistry support for analysis of trace metals, mercury, PFAS, and other compounds in sediment, tissue, stormwater, groundwater, and seawater.
  • Analysis of trace metals using a Thermo Element XR high resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometer (HR‑ICP‑MS).
  • Analysis of total mercury (THg) in water per USEPA method 1631 on a Tekran 2600 and methyl mercury (MeHg) in water per USEPA method 1630 on a Tekran 2700.
  • SPE extraction and analysis of PFAS compounds from tissue, sediment, and aqueous samples per USEPA Methods 537.1 and 1633 using a Thermo Orbitrap LC‑MS/MS.
  • Support senior staff with regulatory compliance assessment and R&D programs, including laboratory toxicity testing, environmental data management, QA/QC, statistical calculations, report preparation, literature searches and reviews, and other tasks as directed.
  • Support for proposal and cost estimate development.
  • Understand and comply with Health and Safety requirements, develop Health and Safety Plans.
  • Understand and apply Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures, assist with development of Quality Assurance Project Plans, and support the development of Standard Operating Procedures and other QA/QC documentation.
  • Apply statistical software for data analysis; familiarity with R, GraphPad PRISM, and ability to develop and apply Excel macros is a bonus.
  • Develop familiarity with and support common field toxicology and risk assessment tools; field work—including sampling, surveys, and deployment of sampling and monitoring devices—is expected, requiring the ability to travel and an interest in field procedures.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams in laboratory and field settings.
  • Participation in professional, industry, and/or policy groups is encouraged, as is a desire for professional development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field.
  • 1 to 5 years of progressive experience in the environmental field, focusing on environmental chemistry and toxicology.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases.
  • Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., R, GraphPad PRISM) preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work.
  • Willingness to travel and spend time at other GEI offices or DoD locations as needed.

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily sedentary with light to medium activity including occasional standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to waist level. Use of keyboard and repetitive motion are common. Vision and sensory requirements are moderate. The role requires moderate flexibility and physical coordination for field duties.
