Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or equivalent from an accredited university.
  • 3–5 years in an analytical lab, ISO 17025 preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office including Excel, Word & PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of analytical instrumentation: GCMS, GC-FID, LC-QTOF, HPLC, FAAS.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new methods on analytical equipment for expanded testing capabilities (beverage and flavors).
  • Manage water quality testing across all production facilities and present trends for QA decisions.
  • Perform internal calibrations, quality control checks, and instrument maintenance.
  • Generate project reports for management.
  • Lead LIMS selection, integration, and deployment.
  • Support production facilities with root cause analysis and trend analysis.
  • Coordinate testing of daily/weekly QC samples across facilities.
  • Update/create SOPs and maintain lab inventory.
  • Participate in sensory testing of beverages including sparkling water and juices.
  • Apply GMP knowledge to drive development and integration of new products.
  • Pursue knowledge updates via education and professional networks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Laboratory Manager.

Job description

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Analytical Chemist role reports to the Central Laboratory Manager and works within the Corporate Quality Assurance department at the Hayward Central Laboratory. This position is responsible for method development and overseeing all analytical instrumentation including management of all calibration records, quality check documentation and instrument preventative maintenance. The chemist role will function as the primary operator of lab instrumentation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • 1. Develop new methodology on analytical equipment as the need arises to expand the laboratories’ testing capabilities. Method development will have an emphasis on beverage and flavor specific methods on GCMS, LC-QTOF, HPLC, Flame Atomic Absorption, and bench top meters. These will include quantification of water contaminants from city municipalities and analysis of flavor and fragrances.
  • 2. Responsible for managing water quality testing program and results for all production facilities within National Beverage Corp. These results will be organized, trended and reported to drive Quality Assurance decisions at the production facilities.
  • 3. Perform internal calibrations, quality control checks, complete appropriate documentation and perform repairs of laboratory instruments.
  • 4. Generate projects reports to share findings with management.
  • 5. Leadership role for LIMS selection, integration and effective deployment
  • 6. Support production facilities and lead root cause analysis investigations for troubleshooting purposes including collection, analysis and summarization process quality information and trends.
  • 7. Receive, schedule, coordinate, and perform testing of all daily and weekly quality control samples from all production facilities in the National Beverage Corp.
  • 8. Update and create new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
  • 9. Monitor, track and maintain inventory of lab materials and consumables.
  • 10. Participates in sensory taste tests of finished products including new and existing sparkling water, soda, energy drinks and fruit juices.
  • 11. Possess knowledge of quality control testing methods and Good Manufacturing Practices to drive development and improvement projects to successfully integrate new products into existing soft drink manufacturing systems.
  • 12. Solve problems by considering courses of action within the framework of management’s goals and standards.
  • 13. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • 14. Other duties as assigned by Laboratory Manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or appropriate equivalent from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory, preferably in an ISO 17025 laboratory.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word & PowerPoint
  • Must have working knowledge of analytical instrumentation with an emphasis on, GCMS, GC-FID, LC-QTOF, HPLC, and Flame Atomic Absorption.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English.
  • Must demonstrate superior analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload without direct supervision.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft business applications and various reporting software.
  • Pass the drug test and physical exam
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible full time schedule that may include occasional weekends.
