Anadromous Fisheries Sr. Research Scientist

Join to apply for the Anadromous Fisheries Sr. Research Scientist role at The Coeur d'Alene Tribe.

Job Overview

This position will assist in implementing a feasibility study for the largest salmon reintroduction initiative in North America, working with top scientists and fisheries managers. Responsibilities include developing a Hatchery Master Plan and conducting research related to the Tribe’s anadromous aquaculture program.

Location

Plummer, ID; Coeur d'Alene, ID; and Spokane, WA (preferred). No remote work.

Responsibilities
  • Develop study designs and implement studies specific to salmon survival, behavior, and productivity throughout their life-cycle.
  • Manage, summarize, and analyze large datasets using statistical methods for internal decision-making and external reporting.
  • Draft Research, Monitoring and Evaluation (RM&E) reports as required by Tribal administrators and federal agencies.
  • Use GIS to assist in the development of maps and/or geodatabases.
  • Gather and enter data in the field, laboratory, and multiple regional databases.
  • Author peer-reviewed scientific and professional journal articles.
Coordination
  • Work closely with staff from partner tribes and the Upper Columbia United Tribes for project implementation.
  • Coordinate with federal agencies and private subcontractors on salmon studies and fish passage projects.
  • Keep Tribal staff and administration informed of project schedules and deliverables.
Travel
  • Attend and present at salmon management workgroups and fisheries professional conferences.
  • Participate in coordination meetings regionally and internationally.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A PhD in natural resource or environmental sciences (Fisheries Science preferred) and 36 months of relevant experience, OR a Master’s Degree and 60 months of relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of salmon habitats, ecological processes, and environmental pressures on salmon recovery.
  • Ability to manage research projects adaptively and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficient in statistical software (SAS, R, SYSTAT, etc.) and capable of operating work boats and trailers.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Compensation

Total compensation is estimated between $89,419.98 and $135,811.86 annually, based on base compensation and benefits.
