Job summary

Iowa Legal Aid is seeking AmeriCorps Justice Interns in Des Moines and other Iowa locations. Interns will work on various projects aimed at supporting low-income individuals, including victims of domestic abuse and ensuring access to essential services. Background

Iowa Legal Aid provides free, high quality legal education, advice and representation to low-income and elderly Iowans with civil legal problems that most dramatically affect them. Iowa Legal Aid seeks applicants for AmeriCorps Justice Intern positions for its regional offices in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Mason City, Ottumwa, Sioux City and Waterloo, subject to funding availability.

Responsibilities

AmeriCorps Justice Interns get the opportunity to work on projects from a broad range of legal areas, including ensuring housing stability, helping victims of domestic and sexual abuse secure safety and independence, protecting consumers from scams and identity theft, and safeguarding access to basic income, food, disability, and health benefits.

Qualifications

We seek applicants who have completed at least their first year of law school by the time their internship begins; communicate well with individuals and groups, both orally and in writing; are committed to helping make equal access to justice a reality for all Iowans. In compliance with federal law, interns will be required to verify identity and status as a US citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident, and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon enrollment.

  • Background working with people who are low-income, elderly, victims of domestic/sexual abuse, and/or have disabilities;
  • Bi-lingual skills (e.g. Spanish, Bosnian, Arabic, French, Chinese, Vietnamese, or ASL)
