Job summary

The University of Illinois Chicago is seeking an American Sign Language Interpreter for the Disability Resource Center in Chicago to provide real-time ASL-English interpretation for lectures, events, and meetings.

This hybrid, 1.0 FTE position requires Illinois licensure and a high school diploma; benefits eligible including health/dental/vision, retirement, PTO, and tuition waivers for employees and dependents.

Qualifications

  • Requires fluency in American Sign Language and ability to interpret between ASL and English.
  • Strong command of English language, grammar, and spelling.
  • Experience providing interpretation in academic or instructional settings preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret simultaneously during lectures, events, and meetings from English to ASL and vice versa.
  • Interpret at special events and assist Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and staff.
  • Attend interpreter staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Review materials ahead of interpreting duties to prepare.
  • Be aware of and respond to the needs of the Deaf/HOH community.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

The ASL Interpreter provides direct communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, staff, and community members. This role involves real-time, bidirectional translation (English to ASL and ASL to English) during academic lectures, special events, and administrative meetings.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Interprets simultaneously with the presentation, classroom lectures and/or other presentations and events from English into sign language; interprets student responses from sign language into English
  • Interprets at special events (such as field trips, student-instructor conferences, and special meetings)
  • Assists Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, employees, and others in situations where interpretation may be essential
  • Participates in regular interpreter staff meetings and in-service training workshops
  • Obtains and reviews related materials prior to providing interpreting services
  • Provides awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing population
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Required:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Current Illinois licensure at the Intermediate Proficiency level or higher as specified in Section 1515.90 of the Interpreter for the Deaf Act of 2007 Rules.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluency in American Sign Language, signed English or other modes of signed communication.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services
  • Skill in simultaneous translation from English to the sign language or modes of communication preferred by the deaf and hard of hearing person.
  • Skill in simultaneous translation from the sign language or modes of communication preferred by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing person to English.
  • Skill in judging and adjusting to the deaf or hard of hearing person's language preference.

    Illinois Residency is required within 180 days of employment.
