Job summary

California State University, Monterey Bay is seeking an hourly Interpreter/Realtime Captioner to provide in-person and remote interpreting for classroom lectures, workshops, and campus events. The role requires translating between English and American Sign Language with accurate conveyance of tone and content.

The position is part-time hourly with duties including training, record-keeping, and possible evenings or weekends, contingent on campus needs.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $45 - $75 per hour commensurate with experience

Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Student Disability and Accessibility Resources (SDAC) Director, incumbents facilitate communication for Deaf, Hard‑of‑Hearing, Deaf‑Blind, and hearing consumers in the campus community. Interpreters may also interpret for university functions, workshops, lectures, performances, and commencement ceremonies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide in‑person and remote interpreting services for classroom lectures and other presentations from English into Sign Language (American Sign Language (ASL), signed English, transliterating, or another manual sign system) simultaneously with the presentation. Ensure register, tone, intent, and content are conveyed accurately.
• Translate responses from sign language into English.
• Provide in‑person and remote interpreting services for short‑term individual assignments, including conferences and meetings, from English into sign language. Ensure register, tone, intent, and content are conveyed accurately.
• Interpret in‑person at special events such as field trips, student‑teacher conferences, Student Housing and Residential Life events, and other CSUMB‑affiliated events.
• Attend SDAC meetings as requested. Participate in mandatory online campus‑wide training. Maintain an accurate monthly record of hours worked, prep time, specific times, and students served.

Other Functions

• Follow policies and procedures established by SDAC, CSUMB, and/or the CSU.
• Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge: Process of interpretation; ASL or required sign system; methods for communicating with Deaf and Hard‑of‑Hearing consumers; RID Code of Professional Conduct; relevant course vocabulary; Deaf Culture; platform interpreting techniques; specialized vocabulary and techniques for professional and technical subject matter.

Ability: Hear spoken English and use ASL, signed English, or another sign system to generate language. Interpret and transliterate between ASL and sign systems and spoken English at the speed required, across settings such as classrooms, conferences, and one‑on‑one meetings. Collaborate with interpreter team and work with students from diverse backgrounds. Interpret effectively at the level requiring unique terminology and language; shift between manual sign system and spoken English; interpret difficult and complex terms, concepts, ideas, and emotions; learn unique subject matter; provide accurate and comprehensive services; and respond to communication needs and preferences.

Minimum Qualifications

Generally, a strong acquaintance with higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four‑year college or university. Two years of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings.

Specialized Skills

Fundamental knowledge of the interpreting process; fluency in ASL and other manual systems; understanding of communication needs of Deaf and Hard‑of‑Hearing consumers; knowledge of academic vocabulary across subjects; skill in terminology and instruction; responsiveness to consumer preferences; thorough knowledge of Deaf culture; ability to convey complex concepts and adapt sign vocabulary; client focus, problem solving, and resolution; understanding of adult learning theory and interpreting methodologies; collaboration with interpreter team.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), or comparable certification.

Thorough knowledge of Deaf culture; experience with manual and oral interpreting/transliteration techniques in higher education.

Technical fluency with Canvas LMS; Microsoft Office Professional Suite; and Google mail and calendaring programs.

Physical Environment

Primarily classroom environment with standard equipment. Standing and sitting during class sessions. May involve travel between campus locations and to off‑campus venues.

Office environment with standard equipment, computer work, and extended periods of desk time. May involve travel between campus offices and off‑campus locations.
