What You Need To Know (Job Overview)
The Disaster Health Services (DHS) Supervisor leads a temporary work unit on a disaster relief operation, providing health‑care activities and assistance to individuals and families impacted by a disaster. The supervisor mentors and supervises DHS Service Associates and works closely with other emergency units to ensure quality care and coordinated services.
The position is located in Gainesville, Florida. It is a temporary assignment (3–12 months) that requires a 40‑hour work week, may involve weekend availability, and may require periodic overnight on‑call coverage. The role is both in‑person and virtual across shelters and other operational locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor and supervise DHS Service Associates.
- Coordinate with supervisors and managers across the operation to ensure DHS, Shelter, Disaster Mental Health (DMH), and Shelter Resident Transition (SRT) workers collaborate for client access to health resources.
- Collaborate with SRT and DMH supervisors to coordinate case conferencing and lead case escalation processes for clients with complex medical needs.
- Participate in routine coordination calls with the National Headquarters Client Care Program team.
- Ensure DHS workers provide health education, health assessments, and determination of client need for higher‑level care.
- Ensure DHS workers assist clients in replacing medications, durable medical equipment, and consumable supplies.
- In partnership with the local community, develop alliances with state and local health agencies and community‑based organizations for referrals.
- Advocate for clients’ healthcare needs and help connect clients with community‑based services.
- Provide hands‑on care for shelter clients, including activities of daily living, minor wound care, and incontinence care.
- Be available to support Red Cross workers as needed.
What You Need To Succeed (Minimum Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience in a healthcare‑related field.
- Active, unencumbered license in Florida as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
- Minimum three (3) years of clinical experience or equivalent.
- Certified in Red Cross Basic Life Support or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (proof of certification).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Computer literate with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and web‑based systems.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and adapt to irregular hours and frequent schedule changes.

Physical Requirements
Regular sitting at a computer terminal, occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to 15–30 pounds. Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Work environment includes moderate noise levels.
