U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Fredericksburg, VA seeks a Staff Optometrist to provide ambulatory eye care at the Fredericksburg Health Care Center (HCC).

The optometrist will be credentialed under Medical Staff Bylaws and work within the Surgery Service Line. Responsibilities include thorough optometric exams, treatment planning, coordination with the Eye Clinic team, referrals as needed, and participation in staff meetings and quality improvement activities.

Responsibilities

• Perform complete and thorough optometric exams with timely clinical documentation.
• Exercise independent professional judgment in diagnosing ophthalmic conditions and planning treatment.
• Promote communication among Eye Clinic team, patients and families to facilitate care.
• Refer patients to other providers when indicated for complex health issues.
• Consult with physicians to augment care for emergent or traumatic ophthalmic cases.
• Utilize privileges to order diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, hospitalize or discharge as appropriate.
• Participate in clinical/administrative committees and regular staff meetings.
• Contribute to development and implementation of Optometry Service care programs.
• Assist in staff selection and infection control procedures.
• Engage in clinical research or reviews and pursue ongoing education.
