Job Summary

The Medical Assistant, Non‑Certified (MA) and Medical Assistant, Certified works within the administration pre‑defined scope of practice guidelines per state location of practice. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will participate in the implementation and evaluation of patient care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. The MA in the ambulatory care setting collects subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicates this data to the health care provider. The MA supports care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals, following through on the patient's plan of care under the direction of the provider, and communicating the provider's written instructions for care to the patient or caregiver. The MA participates in care for patients across the lifespan, in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow‑up as patients move in and out of care settings. The MA performs various duties under the direct supervision of a licensed practitioner, including obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, observing and reporting patients' signs or symptoms, and performing point‑of‑care testing.

The LPN ensures the health, comfort and safety of patients. Documents a thorough medical history, contributes to assessment, and administers medications or treatments as ordered. Provides technical support to healthcare professionals as needed. Counsels patients and family members, under the direction of a registered nurse, on prevention and treatment plans. Demonstrates competency within the full scope of nursing expertise, utilizing appropriate age and population specific standards as designated in their assigned clinical setting.

Qualifications

Two categories of qualifications apply: Medical Assistant (non‑certified), Medical Assistant (certified), and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Medical Assistant, Non‑Certified

• Must be a graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program, or successfully complete Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Pharmacology within 12 months of hire.
• Two years’ experience as a Medical Assistant required if education is not met at the time of hire.
• Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment; re‑certification as required.

Medical Assistant, Certified

• Must be a graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program.
• Nationally certified or registered as an MA (CMA, RMA, or equivalent). Certification programs include AAMA, CCMA, CMAC, NCMA, AMT, and for North Dakota, ND Board of Nursing MAIII registration.
• Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment; re‑certification as required.

Licensed Practical Nurse, Ambulatory

• Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program.
• Hold an unencumbered LPN license with the State Nursing Board, with multi‑state licensure privileges as applicable.
• If IV therapy/management required, must have graduated from an AASPN program or completed an IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
• Obtain and maintain required department‑specific competencies and certifications.
