We have an exciting opportunity for a Altitude Test Technician to join the team!

This is a JETS II CBA position with Amentum.

The Altitude Test Technician will:

  • Perform quality work in the development, fabrication, setup, operation, and maintenance of fixtures, equipment, and facilities related to manned and unmanned altitude chamber testing.
  • Perform duties as inside or outside lock observer on manned tests at altitude, serving on test duty stations responsible for performing emergency actions and evacuation of test personnel in the event of an emergency during testing.
  • Train on and learn the altitude physical symptoms of decompression sickness, hypoxia, hyperventilation, and the treatment of each.
  • Train on and learn the methods of egress of all pressure suits worn by test subjects or astronauts undergoing training.
  • Fabricate, modify, and assemble various complex hardware and systems from engineer drawings, sketches, or verbal and written instructions.
  • Assist in the buildup and operation of complex mechanical systems and equipment including, but not limited to, pressure (liquid/vapor/gas), vacuum, and cryogenic systems in support of the altitude chamber test facilities.
  • Assist in the performance of altitude chamber and life support system operations, personal equipment maintenance, and other routine maintenance of altitude support hardware and equipment.
  • Maintain data records, training records, and other records pertaining to the mechanical and operational function of ground support equipment as well as test chamber hardware, equipment, and systems.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions in order to carry out assignments.
  • Work directly with engineering personnel and/or higher level technicians on the design, fabrication, installation, and operation of components and special systems used in support of space environment simulation testing.
  • Assist in preparation of test procedures, checklists, discrepancy report disposition, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and mechanical test buildup.
  • Support mechanical test buildup, securing of gas samples, precision cleaning, and other related requirements for test operations.
  • Operate forklift and man-lift equipment in the performance of work assignments as required.
  • Work at elevated locations using systems/equipment such as ladders, man-lifts, scaffolding other work platforms.
  • Operate appropriate shop mechanical equipment, systems, and tools in the performance of work duties.
  • Cut, flare, thread, and bend tubing and pipe in the assembly of both high and low pressure liquid, vapor, and gas systems.
  • Clean hardware and components to the appropriate level prior to, during, and after assembly using established procedures and specifications.
  • Perform testing and leak checking of vacuum and pressure systems and hardware.
  • Operate mechanical systems through a data and controls computer interface as applicable.
  • Maintain equipment as necessary, including preventive maintenance and repairs or replacement of parts.
  • Assist with the testing, calibration, adjustment, repair, and set up of test or research oriented equipment or experiments.
  • Execute all work duties in a skilled, safe, and technically acceptable manner.
  • Execute all assigned tasks with technical guidance and/or supervision from higher level technicians, engineers, or supervisor.
  • Wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing during performance of work duties, to include safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, gloves, masks, respirators, coveralls, harnesses, etc.
  • Identify and correct potential hazards and/or unsafe acts/conditions at the work site.
  • Notify Supervisor and Management of any hazards in the workplace and advise on appropriate corrective actions.
  • Maintain work area in a neat, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Assist more experienced technicians in the performance of work duties.
  • Work shifts assigned to duty stations as a test system operator or trainee under guidance/supervision of a certified technician or competent engineer during manned and unmanned chamber testing.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requisition Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a HS Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of 4 years of experience in a field or in a related area.
  • Ability to learn physical symptoms of decompression sickness, hypoxia, hypercapnia, hyperventilation, and the treatment of each.
  • Ability to learn the methods of egress of all pressure suits worn by test subjects or astronauts participating in altitude chamber testing.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to assist with the work of others.
  • Operational knowledge of basic mechanical equipment and systems associated with thermal, vacuum, and thermal-vacuum test environments.
  • General understanding of concepts, practices, and procedures within assigned work area.
  • Capability of passing an Air Force Class III physical and wearing a mask/respirator in support of test operations in oxygen-deficient environments.
  • Requires a High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of basic metal fabrication.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications on a standard PC.
