School Summary

Great River Connections Academy (GRCA) is a tuition-free public online eSchool serving students in grades K-12 throughout Ohio at the beginning of the school year. GRCA is authorized by the Ohio Council of Community Schools and governed by an independent Board of Directors. The school operates through a contract with Connections Academy of Ohio, LLC, to provide its educational program and other services. Connections Academy, a division of Connections Education, is accredited by AdvancED.

Position Overview

The Alternative Program Teacher will assist teachers with educational and instructional activities, as well as non-teaching tasks. They will be responsible for guiding one or more cohorts of students toward college and career readiness through successful completion of the school program. The teacher’s work will balance academic support and advisory activities.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist students in their courses by providing motivation and support.
  2. Collaborate with a team of teachers (both in-person and virtual) to ensure all students in the cohort are on track and progressing successfully.
  3. Assist students with daily assignments and projects to enhance understanding.
  4. Clarify directions and assist students one-on-one or in small groups with course content.
  5. Help Virtual Teachers maintain up-to-date student records and data, including files, online student and family information, attendance, and contact logs.
  6. Participate in the organization and administration of State Testing, as directed.
  7. Implement educational programs developed through the IEP process for special education students.
  8. Implement educational programs developed through a student 504 plan as necessary.
  9. Maintain a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment at all times.
  10. Develop and implement strategies to encourage student collaboration and teamwork.
  11. Attend in-person or virtual field trips as assigned.

Advisory Responsibilities

  1. Supervise an advisory cohort of students, ensuring their progress and serving as the main contact for parents.
  2. Monitor attendance, participation, and academic performance.
  3. Manage escalation processes, communicating with school leadership and staff regarding engagement concerns.
  4. Develop and monitor individualized Action Plans for students in escalation, working with students and communicating with parents and staff.
  5. Act as the primary contact for parents, teachers, and staff regarding students in escalation.
  6. Plan and deliver workshops on work/study habits, teamwork, test strategies, and 21st-century skills.
  7. Support students in identifying and focusing on their potential and aspirations.
  8. Assist with college and career counseling activities under the direction of the School Counselor.
  9. Help students research and understand post-secondary options.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Middle/Secondary Teaching Certification (1-8 License, 4-9 License, or 7-12 License)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience and interest in working with youth in a diverse urban environment
  • Experience in an educational setting

  • Proficiency with internet, Microsoft OS, and MS Office programs
