Qualifications

  • General aptitude and mechanical work skills.
  • Massachusetts Plumbers License – Journeyman or Master Plumber (Not for internal candidate).
  • Must obtain Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Medical Examiners Card within 120 days.
  • Must maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and Driver Qualification File.
  • FMCSA drug pool testing is required.
  • Pass all Operator Qualification Tests.
  • Must reside within a specified geographic area per UWUA/B.U.W. Local 340 contract.
  • Ability to respond to overtime and emergency calls.

Responsibilities

  • To plan and perform the activities associated with all aspects of customer metering and gas service work.
  • Diagnose and service gas appliances (heating systems, water heaters, air conditioners, ranges).
  • Perform gas and electric meter work, data entry, and filing of related paperwork.
  • Document all work orders electronically via Mobile Dispatch System.
  • Install and program AMR devices and gas ERTs; install high-pressure corrector devices.
  • Respond as emergency first responder to gas emergencies to ensure public safety.
  • Identify and repair gas leaks at customer sites.
  • Perform pipe fitting work including installation and repair of meters, gas meters, piping, regulators.
  • Maintain company equipment and ensure timely records for vehicles and tools.
  • Be available for stand-by on-call duties on a rotating weekly schedule.

Position Purpose

To perform the activities associated with customer metering and gas service work for the Alternate Night Trouble Worker (Tuesday – Saturday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm) To also provide service as a gas emergency first responder with the objective of ensuring public safety and protecting company assets. To perform these functions and achieve these objectives without direct supervision and to ensure that these activities are completed in a timely fashion and in accordance with State and Federal Codes as well as Unitil Company standards. To ensure the timely and accurate completion of all necessary records, timesheets, paperwork and documentation needed for accounting, regulatory, asset management, and related purposes. Ensures that all work activities and interactions with customers reflect the highest standards for conduct and professionalism. This position falls under the Department of Transportation drug testing requirements.

Meter and Service:

To plan and perform the activities associated with all aspects of customer metering and gas service work.

  • To diagnose and perform maintenance on a variety of customer’s gas appliances, which include: gas heating systems, gas water heaters, gas air conditioners, gas ranges as well as commercial and industrial equipment.
  • To perform gas and electric meter work, systematic meter changes and credit work. This includes data entry of test results into HTE, the filing of gas and electric meter tags, and the filing of all paperwork for meters, repairs, complaints and investigations.
  • To properly document all work orders electronically through the Mobile Dispatch System
  • To perform the installation and programming of automatic meter reader devices (AMR), as well as gas ERT’s.
  • To perform the installation of gas meter high pressure corrector devices, including programming, downloading, set-up, maintenance and alarm investigation.
  • To respond as an emergency first responder to any gas emergency situation to include gas leak situations. To immediately assess these situations and to make recommendations and/or decisions that will ensure public safety.
  • To identify, make safe and repair gas leaks at customer premises.
  • To perform all functions of the gas pipe fitter, which includes: construction and installation of meter fits, gas meters, in to out meter piping, as well as the installation, repair and diagnostics of gas regulators.
  • To properly care for and maintain company equipment such as; assigned vehicle, tools, material, etc., including timely completion of records associated with such equipment.
  • Must be able to perform stand‑by on‑call duties on a rotational basis for one week at a time.

Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Possess a general aptitude and skill for mechanical work
  • Massachusetts Plumbers License – Journeyman or Master Plumber (Does not apply to internal candidate)
  • Must be able to obtain a Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Medical Examiners Card within 120 days.
  • Must maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s Licenseand Driver Qualification File
  • Will be drug tested under the FMCSA drug pool
  • Pass all required Operator Qualification Tests
  • Must reside within a specified geographic area in accordance with UWUA / B.U.W. Local Union 340 contractual agreement.
  • Be available to respond to overtime work and emergency calls.
HOURS:

Hours shall be Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm

WAGE:

Ultimate rate: $49.51 per hour**, for a 40-hour week. Overtime rates in accordance with UWUA Agreement, Local #B340.
