Job summary

Transamerica Corporation in Baltimore is seeking an ALM Modeler to build and analyze sophisticated models for insurance products, investments, or portfolios to increase risk-adjusted returns.

You will apply actuarial, financial, statistical, data science, and balance sheet modeling to develop, test, and validate models for various functions within the company. Hybrid office work requires three days in the office per week at a hub location in Baltimore.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, computer science, economics, engineering, or a related business field such as finance.
  • Academic or job exposure to at least one area product such as insurance liability, asset valuation, derivatives modeling, liquidity management, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.
  • Good understanding of investment and finance concepts, and ability to creatively apply them in solving analytical problems in the business setting.

Responsibilities

  • Model and quantify risks including equity and interest-rate sensitivities, cash flow variability, credit, and liquidity risks.
  • Embrace new technologies to improve workflows and controls.
  • Gather and analyze market data, compute hedge program statistics, and develop models to simulate financial reporting processes.
  • Apply statistical and mathematical modeling, and manage high-volume data from diverse sources.
  • Interpret issues and recommend defensible solutions; solve complex problems with broad perspective.
  • Assess materiality of modeling and data choices.

Job Description Summary

The ALM Modeler will build and analyze sophisticated models for insurance products, investments, or portfolios to increase company risk‑adjusted returns. They leverage advanced knowledge of actuarial, financial, statistical, data science, and balance sheet modeling analytics to develop, test, and validate models for various functions within the company.

Responsibilities
  • Model and quantify risks including equity and interest‑rate sensitivities, cash flow variability, credit, alternative investment, or liquidity risks.
  • Embrace new technologies to improve workflows.
  • Build external or embedded controls to mitigate operating risks in workflows.
  • Apply risk management techniques and procedures, including the company's mandated risk methodologies.
  • Gather and analyze market data, calculate hedge program or portfolio statistics, and develop/use models to simulate financial reporting processes.
  • Apply and integrate statistical, mathematical, predictive modeling and business analysis skills to manage and manipulate complex high‑volume data from a variety of sources.
  • Interpret internal or external issues and recommend solutions or best practices.
  • Solve complex problems and take a broad perspective to identify solutions.
  • Apply judgment to modeling choices in a defensible manner.
  • Assess the materiality of various modeling and data choices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree.
  • Insurance or asset/derivatives modeling experience.
  • Actuarial science background.
  • Experience with database design and usage.
  • 2+ years of programming experience in C++, C#, Python or other advanced languages.
  • Experience with SAS, R, SPSS, or other statistical software.
Working Conditions

Hybrid office environment. Requires three days in office per week at a hub location (Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, or Philadelphia). Relocation assistance not provided.

Compensation

Salary range: $75,000 – $90,000 annually (actual pay determined by qualifications, experience, geography, location, and operational needs). Eligible for an annual bonus based on the company bonus plan and individual performance.
