Job summary

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe in Reno, NV, seeks an All Mountain Programs Ski Team Coach to lead groups of 3-12 athletes aged 6–16. Emphasis on safety, fun, and skill development following USSS/PSIA methods.

You will coach Beginner to Advanced skiers, maintain equipment, and work with a partner coach. Weekend shifts are required; SafeSport training is mandatory.

Qualifications

• Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
• Proficient skiing on Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner terrain.
• Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, prioritize, and follow directions from Supervisors.
• Ability to work with a partner coach and maintain productive relationships with Ski Team coaches.
• Ability to teach/coach Beginner to Advanced level skiers.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must be able to work at least one weekend day for the season.
• Equipment must be appropriate, professionally tuned, and securely calibrated.

Responsibilities

• Assist in general operation of ski school and resort activities.
• Establish rapport with Ski Team athletes and families; provide coaching day debriefs.
• Communicate effectively with coaches, Supervisors/Director, and Ski Patrol.
• Follow athlete development curriculum and run prescribed drills with demonstrations and feedback.
• Assist in ski team/ski school events and holidays as needed.
• Support Rosebuds, Ski School, and other departments during peak periods.

Job description

Responsible for coaching small groups (3-12) of ski team athletes (ages 6 - 16), with abilities ranging from Beginner (no first-timers) to Advanced/Expert with a focus on safety, fun, and skill development. The All Mountain Programs Ski Team Coach will be responsible for coaching athletes through the appropriate developmental phases following USSS and PSIA coaching methods. Coaches are also responsible for teaching and following all prescribed safety protocols and group handling protocols while coaching Ski Team athletes.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE/ SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Required: Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
• Required: Ability to proficiently ski Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginner terrain, utilizing proper ski fundamentals in all conditions.
• Required: Ability to work under pressure, cross-train, multi-task, prioritize tasks, and follow directions from Supervisors, etc.
• Required: Ability to work with a partner coach, and maintain productive working relationships with fellow Ski Team coaches.
• Required: Ability to teach/coach Beginner to Advanced level skiers.
• Required: Must be able to pass a background check.
• Required: Must be able to work at least one weekend day for the duration of the Ski Team season.
• Required: Alpine skis (professionally tuned), bindings (calibrated by a certified professional ski technician), and boots (binding compatible/certified). Equipment must be appropriate for all conditions and manufacturer-certified (i.e. not outdated).
• Preferred: Ability to work/coach both Saturday/Sunday for the duration of the Ski Team season.
• Preferred: Experience with ski racing, including coaching, competing, race crew, and/or administration.
• Preferred: Experience with Freeride skiing, including coaching, competing, and/or administration. Familiarity with TJFS, IFSA and/or FIS Freeride events, governance, standards, etc.
• Preferred: Previous experience as a Ski School instructor, and/or Ski Team coach. Familiarity with PSIA, USSS, and/or formal experience with technical skiing skills development, including the SkillsQuest training curriculum.
• Preferred: Active USSS and/or PSIA certification within the last 5 years.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in general operation of all ski school and/or resort activities. Performs other related tasks as necessary.

• Understand, observe, and teach all Ski Team safety, group handling, and training operations rules, requirements, processes, and protocols, including the Skier Responsibility Code and Park SMART (applicable to Terrain Park qualified coaches only).
• Establish rapport with Ski Team athletes and families, including training day debriefs with athletes and their parents. Develop camaraderie among Ski Team athletes in a fun coaching environment, and facilitate the development of lifelong skiers.
• Communicate issues, needs, and questions effectively to fellow coaches, Supervisors/Director, and Ski Patrol.
• Manage on-snow incidents utilizing proper protocols, including communicating with Ski Patrol and Ski Team management.
• Follow the All Mountain Program ‘athlete development curriculum’ to develop athlete skiing ability. Run prescribed drills by explaining, performing (demo), observing (movement analysis), and providing feedback to athletes on desired skill proficiency.
• Read, understand, and apply training day Ski Team coach preparation e-mails and included materials/content.
• Assist in the general operation of Ski Team/Ski School activities and special events, including races, competitions, end-of-season evaluations, fun races, etc.
• Assist in Rosebuds, Ski School and/or other departments during holiday periods or as needed (i.e. shovel crew).
