Job summary

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory invites applications for a Post Bachelors Research Associate to cultivate and characterize micro- and macroalgae at multiple scales, using LED-lit raceway ponds and photobioreactors.

You will prepare media, monitor growth, measure lipid content, and analyze data while contributing to manuscript preparation. This role is based in Sequim, WA, with access to DOE facilities and state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree must be earned within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology.
  • Experience with sterile techniques and cell cultures.
  • Experience with cultivating microalgae or macroalgae.
  • Experience with quantifying lipids or other valuable products from algal biomass.
  • Must write technical reports analyzing and summarizing all experimental data.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare growth media.
  • Cultivate algae at various scales (well-plates, flasks, photobioreactors, ponds) and maintain active inoculum cultures.
  • Monitor biomass growth and measure critical cultivation parameters such as temperature, pH, light intensity, nitrogen concentration, etc.
  • Assist in the quantification of biomass lipid content using dyes and NMR sensors.
  • Analyze and graph data and write progress reports.
  • Conduct literature reviews and participate in the design of experiments.
  • Contribute to writing of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
