Job summary

The Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS) invites qualified applicants to attend the DPS Training Academy starting January 2027 or July 2027. Successful candidates will be appointed as an Alaska State Trooper Recruit or Alaska State Trooper, based on qualifications, and will receive high‑caliber training at no expense while earning wages and benefits during the academy.

Troopers work across diverse enforcement fields, with later opportunities to request assignments aligned to interests.

Qualifications

• Citizen of the United States of America
• High school diploma or GED
• 21 years of age or older at the start of the Academy
• Valid driver's license
• Not disqualified from any portion of a prior background investigation in the last 12 months
• Not used controlled substances in the last 10 years (with age exceptions)
• Not convicted of a felony in the last ten years
• Not convicted of a domestic violence-related offense
• Not convicted of more than one DUI in the last ten years

Responsibilities

• Attend the DPS Training Academy beginning January 2027 or July 2027
• Be appointed as an Alaska State Trooper Recruit or Alaska State Trooper based on qualifications
• Receive high-caliber training at no expense and earn wages and benefits while at the academy
• Work in rural, highway, near-urban, and investigative assignments as career progresses
• Station assignments include Fairbanks, Palmer/Wasilla, Soldotna, with academy located in Sitka
