A special education classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. A classroom teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment; establishes and adapts learning objectives and standards for special education students based upon district guidelines and regulations; provides instruction, counseling, discipline, supervision, and evaluates student performance and progress.

A special education classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. A classroom teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment; establishes and adapts learning objectives and standards for special education students based upon district guidelines and regulations; provides instruction, counseling, discipline, supervision, and evaluates student performance and progress.

Essential Functions

  1. Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation of assigned students; plans instructional programs tailored to individual needs; prepares lesson plans; adapts programs as necessary.
  2. Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to students' well-being and curriculum requirements; implements curriculum objectives; attends in-service training to stay current in instructional techniques.
  3. Establishes classroom policies and procedures; provides guidance, counseling, discipline; makes referrals for assistance.
  4. Confers with students, parents, guardians, specialists, and staff to provide guidance, evaluation, and encourage achievement.
  5. Establishes classroom goals aligned with individual education programs; evaluates and records student progress; prepares reports for parents or guardians.
  6. Directs activities of non-certificated personnel; attends to students' physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, and hygienic needs; monitors conditions and behaviors.
  7. Collects and interprets data; develops, implements, and evaluates IEPs; provides reports; amends documents as needed.
  8. Participates in staff meetings and activities for professional development.

Other Functions

  • Serves on staff committees.
  • Participates in activities to enhance professional skills.
  • Performs related tasks within scope and responsibilities.
  • Attends at least one annual Special Education Compliance PD day.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building principal.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of subject areas, behavior management, instructional techniques, safety rules, and special education regulations. Skills in communication, lesson planning, curriculum adaptation, and classroom management. Ability to deal positively with students, adapt to change, organize activities, and maintain a safe learning environment.

Working Conditions

Dealing with diverse student achievement and behavior, handling multiple tasks, occasional interruptions, exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids, physical movement and exertion, and occasional outdoor activities.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree and experience with diverse student populations; additional qualifications may be required for specific programs.

Licenses: Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement; first aid/CPR may be required; driver's license may be required.
