Job summary

The City of New York's Department of Correction seeks a psychologist to evaluate psychological suitability for Correction Officer and Special Officer roles, and to assist in evaluations for DOC staff as needed.

You will maintain records, prepare reports, and participate in staff meetings; court testimony may be required. Requires a doctorate in psychology and AP A-approved program plus supervised experience. NYC residency not required.

Qualifications

• Completion of at least two years graduate work (60 credit hours) in an accredited program leading to a doctoral degree plus two years of satisfactory full-time experience.
• Doctorate in clinical, counseling, school, forensic, clinical health psychology or neuro-psychology from an accredited institution.
• Completion of a re-specialization in clinical psychology plus one year of satisfactory full-time experience.

Overview

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system. It participates in reform initiatives to move toward a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. DOC maintains a safe and secure environment for employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in custody, and provides tools to help them re-enter communities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of at least two years graduate work (60 credit hours) in an accredited program leading to a doctoral degree plus two years of satisfactory full‑time experience.
• Doctorate in clinical, counseling, school, forensic, clinical health psychology or neuro‑psychology from an accredited institution.
• Completion of a re‑specialization in clinical psychology plus one year of satisfactory full‑time experience.

Candidates must also have completed at least three semester credits in personality testing, individual intelligence testing, psychopathology or abnormal psychology, and psychological and/or behavioral intervention, and must have 240 hours of experience under the supervision of a licensed psychologist in each of these areas. Completion of an APA‑approved doctoral program and internship satisfies these requirements, while externships are not accepted.

License Requirements

• Level I: Valid license issued by the New York State Department of Education, maintained for the duration of employment.
• Level II: In addition to Level I requirements, a doctoral degree and one additional year of satisfactory experience (or supervisory experience) in the specialty, plus the license.
• Level III: In addition to Level II requirements, four years of satisfactory experience, with at least one year under direct supervision and at least three years in a supervisory capacity as a licensed psychologist.
