Paine Field Airport is hiring a full-time Airport Maintenance Technician III. This position will remain open until filled. Applications will be reviewed weekly. This position does a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building and grounds maintenance tasks including building, electrical and plumbing repairs, routine mechanical maintenance, and the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.

Candidates should be comfortable working inside and outside in all types of weather. You must have a valid State of Washington Driver’s License. CDL is strongly desired.

BASIC FUNCTION
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building and ground maintenance tasks including a variety of routine building, electrical and plumbing repairs, routine mechanical maintenance and service work, multi-day project supervision and the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, snow plows, front-end loaders and similar equipment.

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Performs a variety of minor building repairs such as repairing or replacing baseboard molding, ceiling and floor tile, doors, locks, windows, patching leaking roofs and similar work.
  • Performs a variety of rough and finished carpentry work including remodeling a variety of structures and building bookcases, cabinets, docks, fences, garbage boxes, picnic tables, shelves, stairs, and other wooden structures and fixtures.
  • Hangs and/or repairs paneling, plasterboard, and other drywall materials; tapes, spackles, and sands drywall and prepares it for painting.
  • Paints a variety of interior and exterior building surfaces, fixtures, furniture, roads, parking lots, ramps, taxiways and runways; prepares surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, washing, and filling as necessary; mixes paints, stains, varnishes, and other protective coatings as required; applies paint or other protective coatings to surface being finished using brushes, rollers, and/or spray painting equipment.
  • Performs a variety of minor electrical repairs such as replacing or repairing broken fixtures, outlets, lamps, fuses, circuit breakers, and switches.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs a variety of plumbing fixtures including faucets, flushometers, sprinklers, sinks, toilets, urinals, and water and drain lines.
  • Inspects, maintains, and services heating, ventilating and other mechanical equipment including pumps and motors; lubricates, oils and adjusts equipment as necessary; clean and perform minor repairs on oil burners and boilers.
  • Builds and installs concrete catch basins, retaining walls, walkways, foundations, bases, and other structures as directed; builds concrete forms and places reinforcing steel as required; mixes and pours concrete; trowels, sweeps, edges and finishes new concrete as necessary.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs concrete and asphalt floors, roads, parking lots, ramps, taxiways and runways; applies a variety of materials to seal, coat, maintain, and patch said surfaces.
  • Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks, forklifts, front-end loaders, man-lifts, tractor mounted mowing machines, snowplows, snowblowers, and similar equipment in order to dig trenches, load trucks, move materials and maintain grounds, roadways and other areas; performs routine maintenance on assigned equipment by checking fluid levels, lubricating, and adjusting equipment as necessary.
  • Acts as project supervisor on multi-day projects, which require coordination of additional labor and services, materials and permit acquisition, and equipment procurement to complete the assigned task.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs a variety of traffic and informational signs on buildings, roads, and aircraft movement areas.
  • Repairs and fabricates metal parts, tools and other items, using acetylene and electric welding equipment.
  • Performs FAA Part 139 inspections in accordance with established procedures, files daily inspection reports, corrects minor discrepancies to FAA Part 139 standards, assists airport electrician with 2400 volt runway lighting repairs, uses pyrotechnic projectiles and propane cannons to control wildlife in the vicinity of the air operations areas in accordance with established wildlife control procedures, and maintains detailed wildlife control records.
  • Operates FAA communication and security systems.

STATEMENT OF OTHER JOB DUTIES
  • Performs and manages a variety of landscape maintenance tasks such as mowing, edging, and trimming lawns, watering and weeding, planting, fertilizing and maintaining flowerbeds, lawns, and fields.
  • May perform a variety of routine janitorial tasks such as cleaning and stocking restrooms, cleaning and waxing floors, and setting up facilities for a variety of meetings and other events.
  • May act as a lead worker over temporary help, work release inmates, community service inmates, and/or lower level maintenance personnel, as required.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of skilled building and grounds maintenance or building construction work; OR, any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Experience in airport facility maintenance and landscaping management or master gardener experience is preferred. Must pass job related tests.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A valid State of Washington Driver's License is required for employment.

Possession of a valid Washington Commercial Driver's License that includes a minimum of a Class "B", air brake and Tank Vehicle endorsement within thirty (30) days of employment is required.

Possession of a valid First Aid Card and CPR Certification within sixty (60) days of employment is required.

Must obtain certifications or licenses as directed by the employer.

Must obtain an herbicide and insecticide license if directed by the employer.

Must obtain a valid Washington State Flagging Card if directed by the employer.

Candidates for employment may be required to pass a post offer physical examination.

A written and field test may be required.

Possession of a Department of Labor and Industries Certified Asbestos Supervisor Certificate is required for specific positions.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • supervise projects that may include permit acquisition and code compliance

PHYSICAL EFFORT

The work involves a variety of manual labor tasks requiring some strenuous physical effort such as lifting objects weighing more than fifty (50) pounds.

SUPERVISION

Employees report to a Lead Worker or Supervisor as assigned. The work varies from routine building and ground maintenance tasks such as mowing lawns or performing janitorial work, to skilled trades such as remodeling an office, installing a storm drain, or operating heavy equipment. Employees at this level are expected to be proficient in a number of different building and construction trade areas such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and asphalt work, and frequently operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment. A higher level of proficiency responsibility, and leadership is expected in one or more disciplines. The work is performed under general supervision and may be spot-checked to ensure timely completion and compliance with work orders, plans, and specifications. Specific instructions are usually given for unusual or non-routine tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather at work sites throughout the county. The work may involve working at considerable heights, in confined spaces such as crawl spaces and manholes, or from ladders, a hydraulic boom truck, or scaffolding. Employees are exposed to a variety of hazards such as working near moving aircraft, traffic, around heavy equipment, or high voltage power-lines, and are exposed to dust, fumes, grease, inclement weather, and so on. Employees are required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary. Employees are required to be on-call on a rotating basis when needed.
