Summary

This position serves as the Lead Heavy Equipment Technician for the Aviation Department, responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair on various vehicles and equipment, including trucks, tractors, fire apparatus, heavy machinery, generators, and specialized automotive equipment. The Lead Technician also mentors team members, assists in managing workflow, and ensures quality standards are met.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on airport vehicles and equipment, including transit buses, cars, trucks, and aviation-specific machinery.
  2. Monitor work requirements, fleet shop personnel, and tools; report to shop leadership.
  3. Conduct quality diagnostics to ensure effective repairs.
  4. Collaborate with other technicians and provide guidance to enhance team skills.
  5. Respond professionally to customer inquiries and requests.
  6. Research and order correct parts and components.
  7. Update work orders with detailed status reports.
  8. Communicate ongoing shop activities to leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment maintenance methods, tools, and materials.
  • Understanding of engine principles and mechanical components.
  • Commitment to safety and hazard communication standards.
  • Ability to diagnose defects and perform complex repairs independently.
  • Proficiency in calculations and shop arithmetic.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Proficiency in tool and equipment maintenance; computer literacy required.
Minimum Qualifications

Five years of relevant experience; or High School diploma/equivalent plus three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in a related technical field.
  • ASE certifications and refrigerant recovery certification.
  • Proficiency with gasoline, diesel engines, and electric/hybrid drivetrain systems.
Physical and Sensory Requirements

Must be physically active, able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted and heavier weights with assistance. Activities include stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, and exposure to various environmental conditions. Sensory requirements include vision, depth perception, touch, and hearing.

Additional Requirements

Valid Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required; training provided if necessary. Certain convictions may prevent employment. Work environment includes a heated/cooled facility with good lighting.
