Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform riveting, fabrication, modification, rework, repair, and installation.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and rework internal and external structural assemblies.
  • Reinstate equipment removed during modification activities.
  • Inspect work for quality and FAA/Avcon compliance.
  • Report concerns to supervisor and address potential inspection issues.
  • Support additional shop, fabrication, and maintenance tasks as required.

SUMMARY

The Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for supporting aircraft modification, repair, fabrication, installation, and reinstallation activities for special-mission and ISR aircraft. This position works with aircraft drawings, maintenance instructions, sheet metal components, riveting, structural assemblies, and removed aircraft equipment to ensure modifications are completed accurately, safely, and in compliance with Avcon standards, FAA requirements, and applicable inspection criteria.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Remove, identify, tag, and document the location of aircraft equipment prior to modification work
  • Handle large metal components, aircraft parts, and related equipment carefully during modification, repair, and installation activities
  • Read and follow aircraft drawings, blueprints, installation instructions, and maintenance manuals to complete required aircraft modifications
  • Perform aircraft riveting, sheet metal fabrication, modification, rework, repair, and installation work as required
  • Install, modify, maintain, repair, and rework internal and external aircraft structural assemblies and sheet metal components
  • Reinstate and reinstall all equipment removed during aircraft modification activities
  • Inspect completed work for quality, accuracy, and compliance with applicable Avcon and FAA requirements
  • Report to the supervisor any work, condition, or repair concern that may not pass Avcon aircraft inspection
  • Perform additional shop, modification, fabrication, installation, and aircraft maintenance-related tasks as required
QualificationsKNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of aircraft sheet metal practices, riveting techniques, fabrication methods, and structural assembly repair processes
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, aircraft drawings, installation instructions, and maintenance manual requirements
  • General knowledge of aircraft maintenance, repair, modification, and inspection requirements
  • Understanding of FAA requirements applicable to aircraft maintenance, modification, and repair work
  • Knowledge of safe handling practices for aircraft components, tooling, metal materials, and related shop equipment
COMPETENCIES
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing inspection-ready aircraft modification and repair work
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, drawings, and work procedures accurately and consistently
  • Sound mechanical aptitude and hands‑on problem‑solving skills in aircraft sheet metal environments

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of three years of aircraft sheet metal, aircraft maintenance, aircraft modification, or closely related experience required; graduation from an accredited aircraft maintenance school may be considered in lieu of experience
  • A&P license preferred
  • Experience reading blueprints, aircraft drawings, installation manuals, and maintenance manuals required
  • Experience installing, modifying, maintaining, reworking, repairing, fabricating, and installing aircraft sheet metal components required
  • Experience working with complex internal and external aircraft structural assemblies preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed primarily in an aircraft modification, maintenance, fabrication, hangar, or shop environment
  • Position may require standing, bending, reaching, climbing, kneeling, lifting, and working around aircraft structures, tooling, and equipment
  • May require careful handling of large pieces of metal, aircraft parts, and related equipment
  • Must follow applicable safety procedures, quality standards, inspection requirements, and FAA compliance expectations

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE
