Job description

Job Description

FlightHouse Engineering (FHE) is seeking a skilled Composite & Structures Technician for a 6–8 month independent contractor engagement in Portland, OR in support of a prototype aircraft program. This is a hands‑on assembly role embedded in a fast‑paced prototype development environment. You will work directly with engineering to assemble, fit, inspect, and iterate on primary and secondary composite structures from first article through qualification.

FHE is an aerospace engineering firm specializing in unique aircraft designs and rapid prototype development. At FHE we design and build everything from 50 lb multicopter to large fixed wing aircraft. If you thrive in a culture where no two days look the same, this role is for you.

What You’ll Do
  • Assemble primary and secondary composite structures per engineering drawings, work instructions, and assembly procedures
  • Perform structural bonding operations and execute surface prep per engineering requirements
  • Conduct fit checks, shimming, and alignment of composite assemblies to engineering tolerances
  • Install fasteners, inserts, and hardware into composite structure using correct tooling and torque procedures
  • Perform in‑process and final inspections including visual, dimensional, and tap‑test checks; identify and document non‑conformances
  • Execute minor composite repairs as required to support assembly progression
  • Read and work from engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, assembly models, and manufacturing work orders
  • Handle, inspect, and stage composite parts and subassemblies in accordance with storage and FOD control requirements
  • Collaborate with structures engineers to provide real‑time build feedback and support root cause on fit or quality issues
  • Maintain accurate records in shop travelers, inspection logs, and non‑conformance documentation
What You Bring
  • 3–6 years of hands‑on experience with composite structures in an aerospace, defense, or advanced manufacturing environment
  • Background in composite fabrication (prepreg layup, bonding, cure operations) that informs strong material handling instincts and quality awareness
  • Experience assembling composite airframe or structural components, including bonded and fastened joints
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting engineering drawings, assembly models, and basic GD&T
  • Solid understanding of composite bonding surface preparation
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgment calls in a low‑oversight prototype shop
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship quality
  • Must have U.S. person status as defined by ITAR
Desired Skills
  • FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certificate is a strong plus
  • Experience with aircraft assembly, both structures and systems
  • Background in experimental aircraft (EAA & homebuilding)
  • Familiarity with 3D model‑based definition (MBD) or NX/SolidWorks part views
Contract Terms
  • 6–8 month independent contractor engagement (October 2026 – April 2027 expected)
  • Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience
  • On‑site work at FHE’s Portland, OR facility
  • Contractors are responsible for their own benefits and tax obligations
