Job description

Aircraft Mechanic Lead

The Aircraft Mechanic Lead assigned to this position is a working lead responsible to the Director of Maintenance for performing duties as assigned. They frequently exercise independent judgment and possess abilities sufficient to supervise a crew of aircraft mechanics. Work is performed under minimal supervision, with the employee consulting the supervisor only for initial job assignments and departures from standard practices. This position qualifies for separate supplemental compensation based on endorsements and certifications.

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following duties. Additional functions may be added by the organization and are listed in the employee's performance appraisal. Tasks listed are examples and may be amended as needed:

  • Lead a team performing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on Bell 407/412 helicopters, MD Helicopters 369 series, and Airbus Helicopters AS350 series aircraft.
  • Direct aircraft movements for launch and recovery at the Aircraft Operations Center.
  • Adjust, align, and calibrate aircraft components; perform functional checks of fuel, hydraulics, engines, avionics, and environmental systems.
  • Maintain aircraft maintenance records and historical documents.
  • Monitor deficiency reports for adverse trends.
  • Use OEM manuals for maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Perform inspections to ensure work quality.
  • Research, order, and receive aircraft parts; prepare parts for return to supply system; initiate material reports as needed.
  • Maintain tools and support equipment in safe, serviceable condition, adhering to tool accountability procedures.
  • Report unserviceable tools and equipment; annotate inspection and condition documents.
  • Operate and maintain support equipment and vehicles.
  • Follow company policies, safety, bioenvironmental, security, and housekeeping standards.
  • Participate in safety programs and ensure HAZMAT procedures are followed.
  • Perform aircraft services, corrosion control, and inspections.
  • Operate GSE, flight line vehicles, and other support equipment as required.
  • Discuss discrepancies with aircrews for troubleshooting.
  • Record maintenance actions according to FAA requirements.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on support equipment.
  • Support additional duties, including flying on maintenance flights, as assigned.

Other tasks as assigned, essential to the employee's role within the job classification.

Minimum Qualifications

Subject matter experts have identified the following minimum qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED; technical trade school, military experience, or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • FAA Airframe & Powerplant certificate.
  • Inspector Authorization (IA) preferred.
  • At least three years' experience as an A&P mechanic on light/medium helicopters and small to medium fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Team leadership experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in aircraft maintenance.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, manuals, and procedures.
  • Decision-making skills based on policies and procedures.
  • Ability to delegate tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of FAA guidelines and regulations.
  • Ability to record maintenance accurately.
  • Security clearance and valid driver's license.
  • U.S. citizenship, valid US passport, vaccinations for travel.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% as needed.
Physical Demands & Work Environment

Requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in various environmental conditions, including hangars and outdoors with PPE. Exposure to mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, noise, and other hazards, with safety precautions mandated.
