Primary Function

The T-38 Aircraft Maintenance Technician maintains all aspects of the T-38 aircraft, support equipment, and forms and records. Performs crew chief, repair and reclamation, quality assurance, maintenance support functions, sortie generation, ground handling, and servicing operations. Performs aircraft inspections such as preflight, thru-flight, postflight, hourly postflight, special inspections, and isochronal inspections. Advises on problems, maintenance, servicing, and inspection of aircraft and related aerospace equipment. Uses technical data to diagnose and solve maintenance problems on aircraft systems.

Essential Functions
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, and maintains aircraft structures, engines, hydraulic, and other related systems, components, and equipment.
  • Supervises and assists in launching and recovering aircraft.
  • Removes and installs T-38 aircraft assemblies, engines, and engine components.
  • Conducts operational checks and repairs / replaces damaged components and systems.
  • Performs T-38 ground engine operations.
  • Adjusts, aligns, and rigs aircraft control systems.
  • Accomplishes aircraft weight and balance functions.
  • Supervises and performs T-38 aircraft jacking, lifting, mooring, and towing operations.
  • Interprets inspection findings and determines adequacy of corrective actions.
  • Inspects and checks components for clearances, tolerances, proper installation, and operation.
  • Inspects and identifies aircraft corrosion for prevention and repair.
  • Reviews maintenance data collection summaries to determine trends and production effectiveness.
  • Performs crash recovery duties.
  • Reviews maintenance forms, aircraft records, automated maintenance data systems, and historical reports to ensure complete documentation.
  • Performs pre-use inspections and operates powered and non-powered aerospace ground equipment.
  • Inventories and maintains aircraft mission equipment.
  • May be required to perform entry and maintenance tasks in confined spaces.
  • Recommends methods to improve equipment performance and maintenance procedures.
  • Uses automated maintenance systems. Inputs, validates, and analyzes data processed to automated systems.
  • Inspects, clears, and closes out completed maintenance discrepancies in automated maintenance systems.
  • Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
  • Stores, handles, and disposes of hazardous waste and materials according to environmental standards and company processes.
  • Inventories and maintains alternate mission equipment. Inventories and maintains aircraft equipment.
  • Use automated maintenance systems to monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, maintain equipment records, document maintenance actions, and time change database.
  • Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks.
  • Maintain strict tool control procedures. Report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor. Inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis and replace worn or broken tools.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations while performing maintenance. Report all accidents, injuries, safety violations, and unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor promptly.
  • Maintain equipment records. Enter in the maintenance records description of the work performed and verify the work was performed satisfactorily.
  • The T-38 Aircraft Maintenance Technician will be required to perform other related duties as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has the responsibility and authority to carry out assigned tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Highly knowledgeable in principles applying to T-38 aircraft systems.
  • Extensive knowledge in T-38 theory of aircraft flight, hydraulic principles, aircraft electrical concepts, and servicing concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, technical documentation, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong decision analysis and problem-solving skills. Ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions. Must communicate issues effectively to management.
  • Highly proficient in T-38 aircraft safety and servicing processes.
  • Knowledgeable in Air Force aircraft form, Technical Order system, supply procedures, and deficiency reporting procedures.
  • Intermediate computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to learn additional software. Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred.
  • Ability to enter data accurately into databases and write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work with all levels of management and staff, including crew members.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use general office equipment.
  • Ability to follow processes and procedures.
  • Strong customer service skills, including active listening, prompt service, and follow-up.
  • Ability to learn and understand company policies and procedures.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Willing to assist teammates and multi-task effectively.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of tactical Aircraft Maintenance experience with fixed/rotary wing aircraft.
  • 5+ years T-38 A/B/C experience or equivalent platform.
  • Previous Air Force Specialty Code 2A3X3 or 2A5X1 experience highly desirable.
  • Multiple aviation qualifications and ability to train others.
  • Experience supporting DoD contracts.
  • Knowledge of depot level maintenance concepts and practices.
  • Experience with TCTO application is a plus.
  • FAA Airplane and/or Powerplant certification is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance.
