Job description

The Aircraft Component Grinding Machinist Level 2 position will operate a computer numeric controlled (CNC) jig grinder to perform machining functions to close tolerances.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Sets up and operates jig grinding machine to locate and precision-grind holes and contours in metal objects, such as tools, dies, and machine parts, on a custom basis.
  2. Analyzes blueprints and specifications and selects tooling according to knowledge of jig grinding procedures.
  3. Mounts and positions tools in machine chucks, spindles, or other tool holding devices, using hand tools.
  4. Studies blueprint, layout on workpiece, or written or oral specifications to visualize grinding to be done and plans sequence of operations.
  5. Computes and sketches hole and contour dimensions and locations in relation to base reference points and lines.
  6. Positions and secures workpiece on machine table and turns handwheels to move table and workpiece to computed position under spindle center, verifying each step with dial indicator.
  7. Selects grinding wheel, grinding speeds, and feed rates for each operation according to knowledge of metal properties and abrasives, and mounts wheel on spindle.
  8. Moves controls and reads dials to set grinding speed, feed rate, spindle angle for taper grinding, diameter of planetary action, and limits of automatic reciprocating wheel feed.
  9. Dresses wheel manually or with preset dressing device.
  10. Moves controls to feed wheel into hole and against surface of workpiece.
  11. Verifies hole locations and dimensions for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicator, gauge blocks, and telescoping gauges.
  12. May be required to have experience with particular material, product, precision level, or with machine of particular type or trade name.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
  14. Uses hand measuring tools (e.g., Micrometer, Calipers, Depth Mic, etc.).
  15. Basic blueprint reading skills, ability to run pre-setup jobs.
  16. Toolmaking background or general machinist skills.
  17. Ability to set up workplace and tooling with minimal assistance.
  18. Understanding of forms in travelers (1st piece, Red Tag, Set Up).
  19. Basic understanding of tooling.
  20. Ability to program CNC Jig Grinding Machines.
  21. Mechanical aptitude and good math skills.
  22. Working knowledge of certified quality standards (AS9100 Rev D).
  23. Keen eye for detail and result-driven approach.
