The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Southwest Regional Office, Air Quality Program, is seeking an Air Quality Specialist Trainee to begin a career that helps protect Pennsylvania's air quality. The role provides formal and on-the-job training to learn to enforce environmental laws and protect communities.

You will participate in inspections, sampling, data management, and enforcement activities while developing professional skills within a structured trainee program.

Formación

THE POSITION

Do you want to start a career that impacts Pennsylvania's air quality future? The Department of Environmental Protection, Southwest Regional Office, Air Quality Program is looking for an enthusiastic and qualified trainee to join our team. As an Air Quality Specialist Trainee, you will participate in formal and on-the-job training to learn what it takes to ensure that industries follow environmental laws that keep our air clean and our communities safe.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position is structured trainee work inspecting, monitoring, and supporting enforcement actions for facilities to ensure they follow all air quality laws and standards. It helps reduce and prevent pollution, improve safety, and support clear communication with communities and industry partners. This includes demolition and asbestos removal operations. As an Air Quality Specialist Trainee, you will learn and perform the following duties:



  • Compliance Monitoring: Schedule, plan, and conduct on-site inspections to observe facility operations and write reports to document compliance or noncompliance and background information

  • Complaint Investigation: Investigate air pollution complaints and document results

  • Ambient Sampling: Collect samples of fuel oil, volatile organic compounds, coal, and other materials; recommend sampling strategies; and monitor stack tests conducted by consultants

  • Data Management: Review, update, and verify accuracy, completeness, consistency, and integrity of all electronic data system entries

  • Enforcement: Write notices and requests to communicate noncompliance; recommend, help plan, and assist with corrective actions; and participate in meetings to address concerns

  • Professional Development: Participate in knowledge management and transfer efforts, collaborative activities with other Bureau offices, job-related training, and more

Work Schedule and Additional Information:



  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Travel is required for site visits.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. This position currently reports to the office one day per month. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you must have the option to report to the headquarters office in New Stanton. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

  • Salary: Most selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $46,827 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS


Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:



  • A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or

  • Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.


Special Requirement:



  • You must possess an active motor vehicle license.
