Position: Air Quality Scientist (CG04)

Responsible for preparing technically sound and legally defensible air quality, greenhouse gas, and energy analyses primarily for California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents. The role involves approximately 85% report writing/analysis and 15% modeling. It is an on-call or part-time position with potential to become full-time.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Support Section and Project Managers in research, technical writing, and modeling; suggest improvements for efficiency.
  2. Develop defensible air quality, greenhouse gas, and energy analyses for environmental documents.
  3. Utilize software such as CalEEMod and EMFAC to estimate air pollutant emissions.
  4. Quantify emission reduction potentials of mitigation measures.
  5. Prepare technical reports or sections for environmental documents.
  6. Use models like AERMOD and HARP to evaluate emission and health impacts.
  7. Create air quality policy documents, including elements for General Plans.
  8. Assist in developing mitigation monitoring plans to ensure compliance.
  9. Achieve project goals within scope and budget.
  10. Build and maintain positive relationships with clients and colleagues.
  11. Represent the firm’s strengths in the air quality industry.
Skills Required
  • Ability to plan, organize, and conduct air quality assessments.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Creative team collaboration abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for teamwork and marketing.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and internet usage.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s in environmental sciences or related field; Master’s preferred.
  • 2-4 years’ experience in environmental services, modeling, and emission inventory.
  • Experience with air permitting, assessment, and modeling is highly desirable.
Work Environment

Remote, home-office setting with some travel and fieldwork in varied terrains and weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Includes talking, listening, sitting for extended periods, and some physical activity such as standing, walking, and reaching. Vision requirements include close and distance vision and focus adjustment.

Salary

$60,000 - $72,500. FCS offers competitive salaries and benefits, with opportunities for growth.
