Job summary

Waterman Group is seeking a senior Air Quality leader to deliver high-profile consultancy projects and provide strategic environmental advice across development, infrastructure and regeneration initiatives.

The role combines technical delivery, project leadership and business development, with opportunities to mentor teams and drive client relationships. A Chartered Environmentalist and IAQM/IES membership are preferred, with substantial air quality consultancy experience.

Qualifications

• Degree in Environmental Science, Air Quality, Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Environmentalist or equivalent professional accreditation.
• Membership of IAQM and/or IES.
• Significant consultancy experience in Air Quality Assessment.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for air quality assessments including modelling and sign-off of reports.
• Lead project teams, manage scope, budgets and client relationships.
• Support business development, fee proposals and tender submissions.
• Mentor and develop Air Quality staff and support recruitment and succession planning.
• Ensure compliance with IAQM, EPUK, DMRB and other guidance.
• Represent Waterman at conferences and client meetings.
• Act as project director on major commissions.

Job description

Location: London, Bristol, Manchester or Birmingham

To lead and grow the Air Quality service, providing technical excellence, commercial leadership and people management across a wide range of development, infrastructure, regeneration and environmental projects. The role combines technical delivery, project leadership, business development and team management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Lead, direct and oversee the delivery of Air Quality, Dust, Odour and Air Quality Neutral assessments.
• Provide technical review and sign-off of reports.
• Lead complex modelling studies using ADMS Roads, ADMS 6, AERMOD and other relevant tools.
• Provide expert witness and planning support where required.
• Ensure compliance with IAQM, EPUK, DMRB and relevant planning guidance.
• Maintain awareness of emerging legislation, guidance and best practice.
• Act as Project Director on major commissions.
• Manage project scope, programmes, budgets and resource allocation.
• Lead multidisciplinary project teams.
• Manage client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provide strategic environmental advice to clients and project teams.

Business Development

• Identify and secure new business opportunities.
• Prepare fee proposals and tender submissions.
• Develop relationships with existing and prospective clients.
• Contribute to regional and national business plans.
• Represent the business at conferences, industry events and client meetings.

Team Management

• Lead, mentor and develop Air Quality staff.
• Support recruitment and succession planning.
• Undertake performance reviews and career development discussions.
• Promote knowledge sharing and technical excellence across the team.

Commercial Responsibilities

• Deliver projects profitably and in line with agreed targets.
• Monitor utilisation, project performance and cash recovery.
• Support strategic growth of the Air Quality discipline.
• Contribute to annual business planning and forecasting.

Person Specification

• Degree in Environmental Science, Air Quality, Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered Environmentalist or equivalent professional accreditation.
• Membership of IAQM and/or IES.
• Significant consultancy experience in Air Quality Assessment.

Strong knowledge of:

• Planning air quality assessments
• DMRB assessments
• Dust and odour assessments
• Proven client management and business development skills.
• Strong report writing and presentation skills.
• Expert witness experience.
• Experience working on major infrastructure and EIA projects.
• Rail, energy or nationally significant infrastructure experience.
