We are looking for a lead Machine Learning Engineer with a passion for using machine learning to build intelligent search applications. Our team researches and implements novel query understanding and ranking techniques, machine learning algorithms and models that power amazing Search experiences across Apple products.

Description

This role will have the chance to build and evaluate new Intent Understanding and ranking algorithms, models and methods that will impact Apple Users and broader AIML community. Role responsibilities include:

1. Lead the research, design, implementation and evaluation of algorithms and models to enhance the quality and performance of personalized intent understanding and ranking systems.
2. Use advanced NLP, deep learning and LLM techniques to understand and match complex queries with relevant content.
3. Analyze loss patterns in the current search and assistant stack and come up with insights, algorithms and techniques to resolve quality gaps with the goal of improving the top-line product metrics.
4. Develop a long-term technical vision; propose a roadmap for team setting clear objections.
5. Collaborate with teams across the company to define product requirements and prioritize ranking criteria that optimize user satisfaction.
6. Establish metrics and continuously improve performance of models by applying innovative ML techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

1. 7+ years of experience in Machine Learning, NLP and applying these techniques at scale.
2. 2+ years of experience in a technical leadership role; coordinating technically complex projects along with mentoring junior engineers, scaling and growing technical teams.
3. Strong software engineering skills in mainstream programming languages, such as: Python, Go, C/C++.
4. Strong communication skills.
5. Bachelors in Computer Science and industry work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

1. In-depth knowledge and expertise in Information Intent Understanding, Ranking or Recommendation Systems.
2. Extensive experience in building production quality systems or applications in search, recommendation systems, or information retrieval.
3. Experience using ML frameworks (pyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow, XGBoost etc.).
4. Ability to quickly prototype ideas / solutions, and perform critical analysis.
5. Background in personalization, user behavior modeling, and data-driven decision-making.
6. Advance degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field, or equivalent industry work experience.

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $175,800 and $312,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
