Job summary

SpaceX in Texas is seeking a Tooling Engineer for the Starmind program to own the manufacturing line for orbital AI compute hardware. You will develop in‑house tooling, optimize part manufacturability, and work with design, production, and suppliers to enable high‑volume, reliable fabrication.

You will drive cost efficiencies, manage schedules, and pursue new materials and processes while meeting ITAR and quality requirements for space hardware.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
• 3+ years of experience with CNC machining.
• Master's degree or PhD in engineering preferred.
• Strong 3D CAD skills including large assemblies and surfacing.

Responsibilities

• Develop in-house machining capability for tooling and deliver high-quality precision parts.
• Analyze piece parts and assemblies for DFM to optimize manufacturing and assembly.
• Collaborate with design engineering, upstream production, and support teams to maintain relationships.
• Work between manufacturing and design engineers, machinists, technicians, and quality personnel to ensure robust processes.
• Implement machining process controls for lights out production with advanced strategies.
• Identify, procure, install machine shop equipment and maintain calibration.
• Support cost optimization and reduction initiatives for fabrication and processes.
• Develop and manage engineering capacity, schedules, and project plans for production and R&D demand.
• Research new materials and manufacturing technologies and finishing options.
• Estimate prototype and production costs for tooling, finishing, and parts.
• Publish and maintain detailed schedules for each development project segment.
