Job summary

The J. David Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, CA is seeking an AI Research Engineer to build AI-native lab systems that ingest literature, datasets, ELN, Slack, transcripts, and protocols to accelerate biomedical discovery.

You will combine ML, NLP, and agentic AI tooling with cloud infrastructure (GCP/AWS), Docker, and Git to prototype tools for hypothesis generation, design of experiments, and interdisciplinary collaboration with Gladstone researchers. 0-2 years experience encouraged.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Computer Science, AI, machine learning, computational biology, or related field.
• 0-2 years of research or industry experience encouraged.
• Strong Python programming and AI-assisted coding experience.

Responsibilities

• Design and build AI-native lab systems for ingesting literature, datasets, ELN, Slack discussions, transcripts and protocols.
• Develop agentic AI that reasons across a knowledge repository and uses external tools for multi-step workflows.
• Prototype, deploy, and review AI tools in collaboration with experimental scientists.
• Evaluate new AI tools and integrate state-of-the-art methods into the lab.
