Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) invites applications for an Academic Graduate Appointee. The role focuses on designing, building, testing, and improving practical AI-enabled tools and agentic solutions from concept to high-fidelity prototypes.

You will rapidly prototype AI-powered applications and workflows, and integrate large language models with internal systems and third-party services. In the Data Science and Analytics group within the Computing organization, you will evaluate

Qualifications

• Eligible to access the Laboratory under NDAA Section 3112.
• Bachelor's or Master's in CS, software engineering, data science, AI, ML or related field.
• Experience with Python or TypeScript and AI-assisted development tools.
• Experience building apps with LLMs, ML services, or generative AI APIs.
• Familiar with agent frameworks, tool calling, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, prompt engineering, multi-step workflows.
• Ability to design APIs, data pipelines, distributed systems, or asynchronous workflows and integrate with internal systems.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in assigned area under supervision.
• Design, build, test, and improve AI-enabled tools and agentic solutions to prototypes.
• Prototype AI-powered applications, agents, and workflows for high-value use cases.
• Build reusable platform components for model access, orchestration, tool use, data integration, and eval.
• Integrate LLMs with internal systems, APIs, databases, and third-party services with tool calling and multi-step workflows.
• Evaluate models, frameworks, and infra for quality, latency, security, and cost.
• Deploy and operate AI services with cloud, container, and CI/CD practices with proper controls.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, design, and business teams to identify AI use cases.
