Job summary

The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University is seeking an undergraduate student to join the Visualization and Decision Support Division for a fall/spring internship focused on AI/ML data preparation. You will gain hands-on experience by labeling diverse datasets and supporting model development in collaboration with researchers and engineers.

The internship is on-site in State College, PA, with up to 20 hours/week during fall/spring and up to 40 hours/week in summer.

Qualifications

  • Interest in AI/ML and data science is encouraged.

Job Description And Position Requirements

We are searching for a motivated undergraduate student to join the Visualization and Decision Support Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. This fall/spring internship will concentrate on gaining hands-on experience in AI/ML data preparation and contributing to meaningful research.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

Typical focus areas include:
  • Label and annotate diverse datasets with a primary focus on geospatial data such as tracks, images, video, text, and sensor data
  • Support AI/ML model development for Navy, Department of Defense (DoD), and Intelligence Community (IC) applications
  • Utilize industry-standard and custom labeling tools while collaborating with AI/ML researchers and engineers to understand requirements and contribute to data quality assurance processes
Students majoring in the following fields are encouraged to apply:
  • Undergraduate students in a STEM major (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, Information Sciences, or related fields)
Interest Skills/Experience areas include:
  • Drive to learn and grow in the AI/ML field
  • Commitment to data quality
  • Strong attention to detail
Preferred but not required:
  • Interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or data science
  • Familiarity with geospatial concepts or mapping technologies
  • Previous experience with data analysis or annotation at any level

You will work up to 20 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters and have the opportunity to work up to 40 hours/week over the summer. This is a paid internship opportunity, and location will be fully on-site located in State College, PA.
