Job summary

The Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) at Stony Brook University seeks an early‑career Research Scientist to join a NSF‑funded Tier‑1 center. Work across AI/ML, data science, computational science, and CS applications with researchers and SBSC staff to run reliable workflows on supercomputing platforms.

You will develop, optimize and scale AI/ML workloads, teach reproducible environments, and contribute to training materials and proposals.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in computer science, computational science, data science, applied mathematics, engineering, physical or life sciences or related field.
At least three years of research using computational, data-driven, or AI/ML methods, including after PhD.
Hands-on AI/ML experience with model training, evaluation or deployment.
Proficiency in Python with scientific computing or ML libraries.
Experience with at least one AI/ML framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, scikit-learn, Spark/MLlib, or Hugging Face).
Experience on Linux-based HPC systems, with command-line tools and batch/invoked workflows.
Strong written and verbal communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities

Develop, run and improve AI/ML, data science, and computational workflows with researchers.
Teach users to work with ML frameworks, GPU computing, reproducible software environments, and SBSC platforms.
Assist with model training, inference, data processing, debugging, benchmarking, and performance analysis on HPC systems.
Create and maintain technical docs, tutorials, and web resources; follow SBSC/IACS policies.
