Position Overview

As our Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) Engineer, you'll develop cutting-edge AI capabilities that transform how patients, providers, and payers interact with healthcare data. You'll leverage expertise in healthcare and clinical practices to customize LLMs and build intelligent systems that process structured and unstructured medical data, extract meaningful clinical insights, and deliver actionable recommendations to improve patient outcomes. Working within our small, agile team, you'll have significant impact on our product's core intelligence and the healthcare experience we deliver.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop AI systems to process, analyze, and derive insights from healthcare data in FHIR format, CCDA, and unstructured documents (PDFs, HTML, TXT, RTF)
• Design and implement data normalization and deduplication algorithms for healthcare information from disparate sources
• Create clinical context extraction capabilities to identify diagnoses, medications, tests, and treatment pathways
• Implement and fine-tune large language models for healthcare-specific tasks, including information extraction, classification, and summarization
• Build systems to compare patient treatment data against standard clinical pathways (e.g., NCCN guidelines) and assess compliance
• Implement medical coding assignment (ICD, SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm) to patient data
• Balance rapid proof-of-concept development with scalable, production-ready solutions
• Contribute to a robust data pipeline integrating AWS, Google Healthcare Cloud API, and PostgreSQL
• Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to integrate AI capabilities into our platform

Requirements & Skills

A good candidate will have many of these:

• Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or related technical field
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years focused on AI/ML systems
• Demonstrable expertise in NLP and deploying machine learning solutions to production
• Experience with both traditional ML approaches and modern large language models (LLMs)
• Proficiency in prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and evaluating LLMs for healthcare applications
• Strong understanding of medical terminology, clinical workflows, and healthcare regulations
• Experience working with electronic health records (EHRs), claims data, and healthcare data standards (FHIR/HL7)
• Proficiency with information extraction, text classification, and entity recognition for healthcare documents
• Strong programming skills in Python (Clojure/ClojureScript experience a plus)
• Experience with AWS ecosystem and cloud-based ML infrastructure
• Expertise in data cleaning, preprocessing, analysis, and visualization of healthcare data
• Knowledge of embedding models and retrieval-augmented generation techniques
• Experience with vector databases for semantic search (Pinecone, Weaviate, or similar)
• Experience with OCR technologies and document preprocessing techniques
• Familiarity with healthcare compliance requirements (HIPAA, etc.)
• Experience with MLOps tools and practices for model deployment and monitoring
• Self-starter with exceptional problem-solving abilities and strong communication skills
