Job description

Hadron Energy specializes in Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) development, design, and research based in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a leading MMR developer, Hadron Energy is designing factory-produced, transportable microreactors that provide 24/7 carbon-free power for data centers, government facilities, industrial sites, and remote communities. Our mission is to create a brighter, healthier, and more equitable energy future.

This is a remote/hybrid internship role for an AI Engineering Intern, based in the United States. The position is ideal for a highly motivated student with experience in artificial intelligence, software engineering, or engineering automation who is passionate about applying emerging technologies to accelerate the development of advanced nuclear energy systems.

The AI Engineering Intern will focus on identifying, developing, and deploying artificial intelligence tools that improve the speed and efficiency of Hadron Energy's reactor design engineering and NRC licensing processes. This individual will work directly with engineering, licensing, and software teams to identify high-value workflows where AI agents, automation, data processing, and custom software can reduce repetitive work and enable engineers to focus on higher-value technical activities.

You will have the opportunity to build real tools used by engineers developing and licensing a next-generation nuclear reactor. Projects may include engineering knowledge systems, document analysis, automated technical workflows, AI-assisted design processes, licensing document generation and review tools, engineering data extraction, and specialized AI agents.

Responsibilities
  • Identify opportunities to use AI, automation, and software tools to accelerate reactor design engineering and NRC licensing workflows
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy AI agents and internal engineering tools for real-world technical applications
  • Develop AI-assisted workflows for analyzing engineering documents, calculations, specifications, requirements, and regulatory materials
  • Build tools that help engineering teams retrieve, organize, compare, and synthesize technical information across large document sets
  • Support development of AI tools for NRC licensing documentation, regulatory research, document review, requirements tracking, and technical information management
  • Develop software integrations connecting AI systems with engineering, project management, document management, and internal knowledge platforms
  • Build prototypes using large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), APIs, and agentic AI frameworks
  • Work directly with engineers and licensing professionals to understand existing workflows and translate technical challenges into software solutions
  • Evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy, reliability, traceability, and usefulness within engineering and regulatory environments
  • Develop safeguards and validation approaches appropriate for AI tools supporting safety-critical engineering activities
  • Measure the impact of developed tools through metrics such as engineering hours saved, workflow cycle-time reduction, and improved information accessibility
  • Research emerging AI technologies and identify applications that could materially accelerate Hadron's engineering and licensing programs
  • Document software architecture, development processes, testing methodologies, and user guidance for deployed tools
  • Present project results and recommendations to engineering and company leadership
Qualifications & Skillsets
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, Data Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field
  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university for the duration of the internship
  • Prior internship, research, software development, or significant technical project experience involving AI, machine learning, or software engineering
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python and familiarity with modern software development practices
  • Hands-on experience building applications using LLMs, generative AI, AI agents, or machine learning models
  • Experience working with APIs, structured and unstructured data, databases, and software integrations
  • Familiarity with RAG architectures, vector databases, embeddings, prompt engineering, tool calling, or agentic workflows is highly desirable
  • Experience with modern AI development tools and frameworks is strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand complex technical workflows
  • Ability to rapidly prototype solutions, gather user feedback, and iterate toward production-quality tools
  • Strong attention to accuracy, validation, data security, and responsible use of AI
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with engineers and technical professionals outside of the software discipline
  • Interest in nuclear energy, engineering design, regulatory processes, or other safety-critical industries is highly desirable
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and comfortable taking ownership of challenging technical projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Passion for using artificial intelligence to accelerate engineering innovation and the deployment of clean energy technology
