Job description

About the National Hockey League

The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded in 1917 and is the leading professional ice hockey league in the United States and Canada. With over 1,500 employees, the NHL is a global sports and entertainment organization dedicated to building healthy communities through hockey.

Summary – What we expect of you

We are building the next generation of AI‑powered capabilities across our data platform. As an AI Engineer, you will configure, orchestrate, and scale production‑grade AI systems using platforms such as Snowflake Cortex Agents and Claude. You will work at the intersection of evolving AI platforms and real‑world enterprise data, partnering with data engineers, analysts, product managers, and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Agent orchestration and configuration:
    - Configure and deploy AI agents on managed platforms (e.g., Snowflake Cortex Agents, Claude API) and extend them with custom tools and integrations.
    - Design multi‑agent workflows with task handoffs, tool use, and human‑in‑the‑loop escalation paths.
  • Business process automation:
    - Identify processes that can be replaced or augmented by agents, then build integrations with internal systems such as CRMs, ERPs, and data warehouses.
    - Design fallback behaviors and human checkpoints for processes where full automation is risky.
  • Data platform integration:
    - Connect AI agents to modern data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks) with appropriate access controls, integrating into existing pipeline infrastructure.
  • Evaluation, observability, and cost:
    - Define success criteria, build evaluation frameworks, and run structured tests prior to production.
    - Monitor agent behavior, manage inference cost versus output quality, and advise on token utilization and cost control.
  • Privacy, security, and responsible AI:
    - Apply GDPR, CCPA, and internal governance across the agent lifecycle.
    - Build fairness, explainability, and human oversight into workflows, working with legal and compliance.
  • Communication and collaboration:
    - Translate AI capabilities and limitations to non‑technical stakeholders and contribute to internal guidelines.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years in software or data engineering, with at least 1 year working with LLM‑based or agentic systems in production.
  • Hands‑on experience configuring and deploying agents on at least one managed platform (Cortex Agents, Claude API, Bedrock, Azure AI Foundry) with real business process integration.
  • Proficiency in Python, REST APIs, event‑driven architectures, prompt design, and tool/function calling within managed platforms.
  • Experience with a cloud data platform (Snowflake, Databricks) and knowledge of data access patterns and governance.
  • Ability to build lightweight CI/CD pipelines for agent configuration deployment.
  • Front‑end development and design tools (e.g., Figma) to shape AI‑powered interfaces.
  • Knowledge of GDPR, CCPA, and privacy‑by‑design principles.
Preferred
  • Background in robotic process automation or business process management.
  • Experience with multimodal agent workflows.
  • Open‑source contributions in AI or ML.
Education and Certifications
  • A degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field (preferred).
  • Relevant cloud or AI certifications (AWS ML Specialty, Azure AI Engineer, Snowflake SnowPro) are a plus.
Skills
  • Strong judgment in selecting managed AI platforms versus custom solutions.
  • Independent, practical problem solver with high ownership.
  • Privacy, security, and governance as core engineering responsibilities.
  • Consistent focus on fallback design, monitoring, and human oversight.
  • User‑centered mindset prioritizing usability and clarity.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of evolving AI platforms.
  • Microsoft Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication at all levels.
  • Data analysis proficiency; attention to detail and organization.
  • Positive, energetic attitude.
