Job summary

The OpenAI Foundation seeks an AI Deployment Engineer in San Francisco for a hybrid role, three days in the office weekly. You will guide nonprofit grantees from idea to production, selecting AI tools and building scalable, responsible deployments.

You will work closely with nonprofit leaders and technical teams to translate mission goals into practical AI solutions. You will prototype alongside grantees, test assumptions, and develop reusable tooling that accelerates impact while safeguarding

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, preferably in forward-deployed or customer-facing settings.
• Strong coding skills in Python, Java, C++, TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Solid understanding of AI/LLM tools and practical real-world use.
• Ability to communicate with both technical and nontechnical audiences and translate goals into plans.

Responsibilities

• Partner with high-impact nonprofit grantees to identify practical AI use cases and move from ideation to deployment.
• Advise nonprofits on tool selection, architecture, workflow design, safety, data handling, and change management.
• Prototype with grantees, building demonstrations, references, integrations, and lightweight production systems.
• Pressure-test technical assumptions during grant design to ensure feasible implementations.
• Develop reusable tools to deploy AI responsibly in nonprofits and philanthropy.
• Synthesize grantee insights into feedback for product and grantmaking strategy.
• Build relationships across nonprofit and philanthropy ecosystems as a trusted technical advisor.
