Job description

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an accomplished, driven, high-metabolism editor based in San Francisco to lead our coverage of the most consequential forces reshaping technology: artificial intelligence, venture capital, and the high-stakes race for superintelligence.

This editor will guide a talented team of beat and enterprise reporters, driving agenda-setting coverage of major AI labs (including OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind, SpaceXAI, and beyond), the venture capital firms funding them, and the founders and investors building the next tech paradigm.

The ideal candidate has a knack for creative framing and helping reporters shape tips into ambitious stories, as well as the speed to ensure our top talent land scoops fast and beat the competition. You will manage a high-speed cadence of scoops, revelatory enterprise and accountability projects, and incisive analysis. You demonstrate strong organization and energetic leadership and the ability to seamlessly communicate and share tasks across time zones on a highly productive team. You have a “can do,” collaborative attitude and a drive to live on the bleeding edge of where the world-changing AI race is headed.

You Will:

  • Direct a team of reporters to dominate news on the products, personalities, deal flow, and strategic turning points across top AI labs and venture capital firms.

  • Work closely with reporters to turn tips, internal memos, and hunches into exclusive news breaks, deeply reported features, and long-form investigative projects.

  • Help reporters build, expand, and navigate deep sourcing networks across all levels—from frontline researchers and engineers to syndicate partners, founders, and top VC execs.

  • Balance the demands of fast-breaking news alerts with the patience required to develop long-range, agenda-setting journalism.

  • Partner with editors and reporters across global bureaus and media formats (digital, audio, visual) to deliver seamless, comprehensive tech reporting.

You Have:

  • At least 5–7 years of professional journalism experience, with at least 3+ years directly editing tech, venture capital, or AI coverage, alongside demonstrated editorial management capabilities.

  • A sharp editorial eye capable of spotting original angles on stories the world is watching, paired with a proven understanding of complex corporate structures and deal‑making.

  • Elite line‑editing capabilities, strong storytelling mechanics, and the ability to package stories cleanly under intense deadline pressure.

  • The combination of ambition and empathy that will inspire reporters to get the best out of themselves while navigating high‑pressure, highly competitive beats.
