Job summary

The Georgia Department of Agriculture is seeking an Agriculture Animal Industry-Meat Inspector (PT). You will inspect red meat products and processing facilities to ensure compliance with federal and state standards, including ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections.

The position requires residence in listed counties or willingness to relocate and a valid vehicle for travel. Selected applicants must complete USDA Inspection Methods training and pass exams; background checks and motor vehicle

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and one year of experience in the area of assignment.
• Two years of college with chemistry or life sciences (12 sem hrs or 20 quarter hrs).
• State or Federal Meat Inspection or Food Inspection experience (preferred).
• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Environmental Science, Biology, or closely related field (preferred).
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (preferred).

• Possess access to reliable transportation; travel less than 15% of total travel.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

This position is assigned to the following counties: Floyd Bartow Cherokee Polk Paulding Cobb Haralson Douglas Carroll Heard Coweta Troup Meriwether. The selected applicant must reside in these counties or be willing to relocate.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under direct supervision, he learns to inspect red meat, products, and meat processing facilities to determine compliance with legal standards: This includes antemortem and post-mortem inspections. This position requires access to a personal vehicle or reliable transportation. Incumbents must work in adjoining areas as program requirements dictate, although travel outside of the assigned area is expected to be less than 15% of total travel.

NOTE: CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

As a condition of continued employment, the selected candidate must complete and pass all required USDA Inspection Methods training and tests at the first available opportunity after being hired. Candidates who fail the Inspection Methods exam on their first attempt may be eligible for one (1) additional retest, at the GMIS Director’s discretion.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma/GED and one (1) year of experience in the area of assignment; or two (2) years of college, which included 12 semester hours or 20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• State or Federal Meat Inspection or Food Inspection experience.
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university in Animal Science, Environmental Science, Biology, or a closely related field.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
