COUNTY OF MENDOCINO is seeking an Assistant Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights and Measures in Ukiah, CA. The role involves directing departmental programs, supervising staff, planning budgets, enforcing pesticide laws, and coordinating with agencies.

The incumbent may serve in the absence of the Commissioner. The position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field and at least four years of progressively responsible enforcement experience, including supervisory duties.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Agriculture Science, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.
• Four (4) years of progressively responsible agricultural or weights and measures inspection and enforcement work, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.

Responsibilities

• Assists in planning, organizing, administering and supervising activities, programs, and operations of the office of the Agriculture Department.
• Performs supervisory responsibility including interviewing, hiring and training, assigning and directing work, evaluating performance, and addressing personnel issues.
• Participates in budget development, forecasting staffing needs, monitoring expenditures, and preparing budget adjustments.
• Establishes long-range goals and plans to achieve departmental objectives.
• Ensures pesticide use enforcement and trains growers and licensees in pesticide laws; conducts inspections and applies regulations.
• Ensures compliance with weights and measures laws; reviews periodic reports and conducts field reviews of staff work.
• Interprets laws/regulations for staff; recommends procedural changes as requirements evolve.
• Assists the public with pest control issues, meets with state/federal legislators, and represents the department in official matters.
• Issues pesticide permits, operator IDs, and phytosanitary certificates; assists in annual crop reporting and stakeholder meetings.
• Conducts inspections of inbound plant shipments and ensures device accuracy and state registrations.
