Job Summary

This position reports directly to the Swine Farm Manager in the Animal and Dairy Science Department (ADS) and ultimately to the Head of ADS. The principal duties include providing day-to-day operational support under the direction of the Swine Farm Manager and Sr. Farm Manager of swine operations; direct involvement in feed preparation, facility maintenance and repairs; equipment operation, maintenance and repair; working with faculty and farm staff to ensure research, teaching and extension missions are accomplished.

Responsibilities

• Perform assigned duties under the direction of the Swine Farm Manager.
• Ensure farm operations and facilities are maintained to ensure health and safety of animals; work across all phases of swine management for animal scientists, research technicians, and graduate students.
• Feed, maintain feeding systems and waterers; operate equipment such as tractors, skid steers, backhoes, dump trucks, and possibly tillage and planting equipment.
• Assist faculty, research technicians, and students in collecting research samples and data.
• Assist in artificial insemination and management of gilts and sows; process newborn pigs; provide treatment and care for all classes of animals.
• Comply with all UGA policies including record keeping and timekeeping; perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of livestock management, animal handling skills, and agronomic practices for growing and harvesting crops required for animal production.
• General knowledge in planting and harvesting forage and row crops.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work activities.
• Experience with equipment, fence repair, and construction.

Working Hours

40 hours per week with schedule to be determined by supervisor. May include some weekends and holidays.
