Position — Full-Time

Summary

Under direction from agency principal and/or agency management, the Agency Safety Representative works to monitor, coordinate, and continuously improve the agency’s safety compliance program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Together with agency senior management, monitor the agency’s Safety Performance Rating (SPR); set and reinforce agency and van operator safety goals; develop incentives and/or recognition programs to measure and reward positive safety performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all agency and UniGroup safety policies and procedures, Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), including van operator qualifications, vehicle inspections, van operator and agency safety evaluation systems, substance abuse testing, accident analysis/prevention, vehicle licensing and permit issuance, and van operator log submissions and hours of service tracking.
  • Receive and respond to safety notifications such as safety alerts; items due (CDL’s, V/O medicals, insurance, vehicle inspections, missing logs); coordinate fines for untimely log submissions, chargebacks for licensing fees, and help problem-solve in the event of agency/van operator performance issues.
  • Identify safety compliance successes, problems, and trends; prepare profiles; monitor progress; produce and distribute safety statistical information to assist agency and van operators in improving safety performance.
  • Coordinate safety training, awareness, monitoring, and problem resolution for the agency’s van operators and associates, including developing policies around safe dispatching of vehicles; review and audit of van operator logs; communicate strategies for estimating shipment handling time; identify alternatives during out-of-hours periods; and establish on-call procedures for major losses or accidents.
  • Encourage staff and van operators to identify and report safety issues; identify non-compliance problems and recommend corrective action, up to termination of van operators or agency staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in training, monitoring, and corrective action plans for hours-of-service compliance, with focus on new van operators and those needing improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Transportation, Communications, or equivalent experience desired.
  • 2 years of safety-related experience in the transportation industry.
  • Working knowledge of DOT guidelines, OSHA compliance, hazardous material handling and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, including FMCSRs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions and strategies regarding location safety needs.
Physical Requirements
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear; ability to sit for long periods, and to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach occasionally.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
