Base pay range
$80,387.00/yr - $95,790.00/yr
The mission of the New York Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns.
The NYPD's Police Action Litigation Section ("PALS") assists the NYC Law Department in the defense of litigation against the City, the Police Department, and individual members of the service, where such litigation arises from police enforcement action.
Reporting to the Director, PALS, the Agency Attorney II will be assigned to the ESI Unit to:
- Develop best practices for e-discovery production;
- Aid in discovery compliance; and
- Conduct document review and production using Nuix Discover, a document analysis and review software platform, in response to both civil discovery and Freedom of Information Law requests.

AGENCY ATTORNEY - 30087
Minimum Qualifications
- Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
- One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
- Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
Preferred Skills
Preferred skills include: - Admission to the NYS Bar, and at least 3 years of relevant legal experience. - Familiarity with civil discovery and the Freedom of Information Law. - Excellent project management skills, including the ability to prioritize requests, meet deadlines, and manage multiple concurrent projects across a high-volume case-load. - Ability to recognize or assess document and subject sensitivity and maintain confidentiality concerning same. - Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Interest in collaborating to improve current workflows used by the ESI group to keep up with growth and changes to the law.
Residency Requirement
New York City Residency is not required for this position.
