Job summary

Pacifica Sea Lions Aquatic Club (PSL) is seeking an Age Group Swim Coach to mentor swimmers from beginners to competitive levels. The position is part-time, ~15–20 hours/week, with in-person and remote components at Brink Pool in Pacifica, CA.

Compensation ranges from $25–$30 per hour and includes development opportunities. Responsibilities cover coaching, assisting the Head Coach, swimmer development, and ensuring safety and compliance with USA Swimming guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Experience: At least 3 years of coaching experience in competitive swimming, preferably within a USA Swimming-affiliated competitive swim team.
  • Certifications: Current USA Swimming Coach Certification, Level 2 ASCA Certification, CPR/First Aid, and background screening required.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of swimming techniques, stroke mechanics, and competitive swimming rules.

Responsibilities

  • Coaching: Focus on the “whole athlete,” including mental and emotional wellness, dryland exercise, injury prevention, training and racing strategies, and technical proficiency in the water.
  • Assisting: With direct supervision by the Head Coach, align with fellow coaches in leading practices and developing training sessions.
  • Swimmer Development: Identify strengths and areas for improvement, providing tailored feedback to enhance performance.
  • Focus: Promote a positive, progressive, inclusive, supportive, and winning culture among athletes and families.
  • Team and Roster Co-management: Support Head Coach in swimmer attendance, team communication, and parental engagement.
  • Safety, Culture, & Wellbeing: Ensure USA Swimming guidelines and safety protocols are followed at practices, meets, and events.
  • Administrative Support: Assist with team events, meet entries, and other tasks; familiarity with Meet Manager, Fastswims, Team Unify.

Job description

Overview: The Pacifica Sea Lions Aquatic Club (PSL) seeks to fill the position of Age Group Swim Coach. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing exceptional coaching and mentorship to swimmers of varying skill levels, from beginners to competitive athletes. This is an hourly position that offers the opportunity to work in a supportive and dynamic team environment. PSL is a local, community-focused club with 150+ USA Swimming registered swimmers training and competing under the Pacifica Sea Lions name as one of Northern San Mateo County’s most successful and established competitive swim teams with over 60 years of tradition and history.

PSL is a year-round competitive program that offers opportunities for all levels of swimmers. Our mission at the Pacifica Sea Lions is to inspire our members to achieve their maximum swimming potential through high-quality coaching and self-motivation with the goal of team unity in a safe and supportive environment for all.

  • Job Title: Age Group Swim Coach
  • Location: Brink Pool, Oceana High School, 401 Paloma Ave, Pacifica, California
  • Compensation: $25 - $30 per hour based on experience
  • Job Type: Part time, non-exempt, ~15-20 hrs/week, including possible mornings/weekends, remote and in-person meetings
Responsibilities:
  • Coaching: Focus on the “whole athlete,” including mental and emotional wellness, dryland exercise, a focus on injury prevention through age-appropriate movement patterns, training and racing strategies, and a strong emphasis on technical proficiency in the water.
  • Assisting: With direct supervision by the Head Coach and aligning with fellow coaches in leading practices, developing training sessions, instructing swimmers’ technique. Carries out duties as assigned by the Head Coach in alignment with overall program goals.
  • Swimmer Development: Help identify strengths and areas for improvement in individual swimmers, providing tailored feedback and guidance to enhance performance.
  • Focus: Promoting and encouraging a positive, progressive, inclusive, supportive, and winning culture amongst athletes and their families.
  • Team and Roster Co-management: Support the Head Coach in managing day-to-day team operations, including swimmer attendance, team communication, and parental engagement.
  • Safety, Culture, & Wellbeing: Ensure all safety protocols and USA Swimming guidelines are followed during practices, meets, and events. Provides a safe environment for PSL members, families, volunteers, and guests at all PSL programs, practices, clinics, events, and meetings.
  • Administrative Support: Assist with team events, meet entries, and other administrative tasks as needed. (Familiarity with Meet Manager, and Fastswims, Team Unify (SportsEngine))
  • Communication: Build strong relationships with athletes, parents, staff, and Board members to ensure a positive and supportive team environment. Provide regular feedback to athletes and communicate progress to parents.
  • Certifications, Compliance, & Safe Sport: Maintains USA Swimming membership in good standing and follows all Pacific Swimming policies (background checks, athlete protection training, etc.). Supports and reinforces team-wide codes of conduct as directed by the Head Coach or Safe Sport Coordinator. Maintains USA Swimming Safe Sport Club recognition in concert with the Board.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience: At least 3 years of coaching experience in competitive swimming, preferably within a USA Swimming-affiliated competitive swim team.
  • Certifications: Current USA Swimming Coach Certification, Level 2 ASCA Certification, CPR/First Aid, and background screening required. (If not certified, the candidate must obtain certifications within the first 3 months of employment.) Safety training for swim coaches (both online and in-water)
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of swimming techniques, stroke mechanics, and competitive swimming rules.
  • Skills: Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with swimmers of various ages and abilities. Proficiency in responding to email, google suite and willingness to learn team management software.
  • Personal Qualities: Enthusiastic, motivating, and a team player who is dedicated to athlete development and growth. Has a willingness to be flexible, multitask when necessary, receives feedback graciously, and demonstrates initiative and a growth mindset.

Work Schedule:

The schedule varies based on season and business needs.
